The name "Brainerd" is derived from the Sioux word meaning "place where buffalo are hunted." The first Europeans to visit what is now Brainerd were French traders and fur trappers in 1758. In 1818, US troops burned down reductories near what is now downtown Brainerd after an expedition seeking Native American scalps failed to find any evidence of human activity on the site. After years of development by local farmers and lumbermen, Brainerd became a center for agriculture and commerce in the early 20th century. The discovery of oil in nearby Buffalo Bayou helped spur economic growth during this time period. By World War II, however, industry had declined and Brainerd lost its status as an important agricultural center to neighboring Stroudsburg, PA. Today, despite some challenges such as an aging infrastructure and declining tax base, Brainerd remains an active community with strong ties to its local businesses and residents. Many efforts have been made to revive its economy including attracting investment from outside sources; developing new public schools; and increasing access to arts and cultural opportunities.

Brainerd was founded in 1851 by Andrew Brainerd and his wife Mary. The town became a surrounding community of Minneapolis after it was incorporated in 1862. The towns' boundaries grew to include parts of the cities of St. Paul and Rochester before the merger of these two municipalities in 1967. Today, Brainerd is a small, rural town with a population of around 10,000 people who live primarily in the townships that make up its core area. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Brainerd were Norwegian immigrants who built log homes on land that they purchased from the Chippewa nation. In 1851, Andrew Brainerd and his wife Mary moved to this location and began trading goods with the Chippewa nation for their food supplies and horses. By 1865, Andrew had started farming some 400 acres (168 hectares) of land which he divided among his five children. From here, business activity developed rapidly as farmers bought inputs needed for their crops including seed, water mills, sawmills, wagonroads/roadsides and other necessary infrastructure for expanding production. Over time, Andrews family also acquired additional land which they used for raising livestock orchards and corn fields; eventually making Brainerd one of Minnesota's most significant agricultural communities. In 1865-1866 Andrew's son John operated a gristmill on the river at what is now River Heights Drive; this mill provided power to many businesses within the town today including several banks which still operate today as part of MNBanks Incorporated headquartered in downtown Minneapolis! In 1868-1869 Reverend C[hristopher] L[eitbrandt], an German Lutheran minister arrived in Minnesota as part of Evangelical Lutheran Church USA (ELCA) – oneofthe largest Protestant denominations admitted into Minnesota – arriving at what is now Northeast High School (now known as Eastman College). Reverend Laitbrandt soon started preaching services at various locations within the new settlement before founding his own church on May 6th 1870 located on present day Nicollet Avenue adjacent to Northeast High School! Reverend Laitbrandt remains an important figure within local history as well as religious education within northeastern Minnesotan community today! During much of its early years until merging with Minneapolis & St Paul County #1 school district), Brainerd served primarily as a bedroom community for Minneapolis & StPaul County #2 school district students living westward near Interstate 35W & Snelling Avenue eastward near Saint Anthony Way during peak morning rush hours when both districts had large numbers Of students!

The first settler in what is now Brainerd was Ole Rasmuson, who arrived in 1849. In 1869, John Latta moved to Brainerd and opened a store. In 1876, the first post office was established at Brainerd. By 1907, the population of Brainerd had reached 693 people.
