In 1934, Johnny Appleseed started buying shares in the company and served as its president until his death in 1984. During Johnny Appleseed's time as president, Brainerd Coffee became one of the most prestigious brands in North America for its quality coffee products. In 1957, Jimmy Dean bought a controlling interest in the company and began marketing it under his own name. From then on, Brainerd Coffee would be known simply as Jimmy Dean's Coffee Company. The name "Brainerd" comes from the Dakota Sioux word meaning "the place where the water flows." The first settler in what is now Brainerd was John Friesen in 1837. He and his family moved to this location from Illinois about 1838-39. A post office called Brainerd was established in 1846, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1902. A new post office called Brainerd began operation on July 1, 1907 and operated until 1959. The town center was platted by George Wesselmann around 1898. At that time there were only twelve houses in town and most of the development came about through annexation of surrounding villages during the early years of its existence. The present day attraction of Brainerd is its large number of lakes which make it an attractive place to live or do business; its natural resources including timber, gasoline and agriculture; as well as its excellent public schools which have helped make it an important community throughout its history

Brainerd is a town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 1,281 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from an early settler's Brandenburg surname, which means "bridge over the creek." The first post office in Brainerd was established on December 15, 1854, and was renamed Medford on February 17, 1865. It was again renamed Brainerd on October 8, 1872 after Major General John A. Brainerd who had been nominated as Secretary of War by President Ulysses S. Grant and confirmed by the Senate on October 14th. On January 3rd, 1899, it lost its status as a separate town when it amalgamated with Hibbing to form Hibbing-Brainerd-Hibbing County. The towns of Aberdeen and Hastings merged into Brainerd on January 1st 1907 and remain there to this day (though they are now included within Hibbing). The original downtown main street in Brainerd leading east to west is still named Main Street today though various other streets have since been added or replaced within the limits of the city limits since then!
