It is the county seat of Hennepin County and home to the University of Minnesota's Brainerd Campus. The town was named for its founder, James B. During World War I, Brainerd became an important munitions manufacturing center due to its access to raw materials and its proximity to the Great Lakes region. In the 1920s, residents began growing tired of low wages and lack of social services in their community. They developed a movement to transform Brainerd into a modern city with high-quality public education, recreational opportunities, and economic development. This effort resulted in several successful citywide referenda that helped bring about change within the community. Today, Brainerd retains many features traditional to Minnesotan towns such as outdoor markets, strong family values, and a vibrant downtown district.
Brainerd, Minnesota was founded in 1837 by John Brainerd and his family. The town was named for John's brother, Braheerd. In 1890, the town had a population of just under 1,000 people. By 1920, the population had grown to over 10,000 people and it remained that size until 2000. In 1950, the Brainerd Municipal Airport opened and would serve as the main airport for the town until it closed in 1991. The town also has a small shopping mall which opened in 1984.
