Bloomington, Minnesota is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the county seat of Morrison County. As of 2010, the population was estimated to be over 100,000 people. The city was founded in 1853 by Swedish immigrants as a terminus for wagon trains travelling from Dakota Territory to Illinois. Bloomington became an agricultural town with a large dairy industry and until recently was home to one of the largestrolley systems in North America. The city's nickname is "The City on the Lake." The first settlers in what would become Bloomington arrived via boat from Stonington, Connecticut on July 4, 1853. They were led by Captain John Swenson and his brother-in-law Ole Hanson who had chartered two boats carrying fifty-six passengers and crewmen: twenty Swedes, elevenoutherners called Timpawa Indians (chiefs of a band that lived near present day Minneapolis), three white men from Illinois named George Hennepin and Jonathan Edwards, thirteen Native Americans including five chiefs or war leaders known as "Pine Gables" because they resided atop a high bluff overlooking the water's edge at Pine Springs Resort (now part of downtown). Bloomington grew quickly due to its location on the Mississippi River at the junction of two important transportation routes: northward alongthe river to St Anthony Falls for shipping goods downriver to Chicago Dells; southward alongthe river to Minneapolis for raw materials needed by both cities' burgeoning businesses. In addition, many new families moved into Bloomington during this time; among these were some of America's earliest Baptists who started religious services at First Baptist Church in 1857 followed by Lutheranism in 1860 before becoming Congregationalists sometime between 1870 and 1880 In 1873, Indiana Canal Company general manager Samuel Inskeep laid out a plan for what would become downtown Bloomington which included four blocks on north side of State Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Street This area now includes much of central business district (CBD) today while once serving mainly as residential areas Orion Road east and west lie within Inskeep’s original notion but have since been developed beyond recognition . Some believe that Inskeep may have intended for Orion Road – bisected by Scott Boulevard –to serve as an artery linking downtown with adjacent neighborhoods such as Seward Heights east or west However it is more likely that he only envisioned developing east/west streets parallel with State Street instead because this alignment would allow him easy access to Main Street which ran through hisproperty . It also should be noted that even though today most buildings visible from Scott Boulevard originate inside Inskeep’s original boundaries there are still several streets located within those boundaries which served primarily commercial purposes prior to their incorporation into Downtown Blingtown . For example Union Avenue runs north–south just pastScott Boulevard then turns northeast towards Interstate 55 while Spring Place runs southeast–northwest just pastI-55 before turning northwest again towards South Park Meadows shopping center across I-94 From what we can see today it appears thatInskeep did not intend any street grid pattern when designing Downtown Blingtown however this does not mean that he did not contemplate its eventual future development Actually quite the opposite - plans for later development reflect how intersections throughoutbloomingtonereized attention and changed gradually over time according to changing needs or preferences rather than following strict grid patterns
