Their weapons included swords, bows and arrows, spears, hoes and sickles – all designed to protect themselves against Indian attacks during this time period. When hostilities ended at peace negotiations following America’s victory over European forces at Yorktown near Newport News Va., these thirty pioneers decided it would be best if they all stayed together rather than scattered among various towns throughout North America like so many others! They named their new settlement after themselves – “Township ontheHudson” – an indication that their purpose remained unchanged: To live within sight/hearnce of each other so that any potential emergencies could be addressed quickly! Gun ownership spread rapidly through Scandinavia after this initial tradeoff; by 1700 nearly every town had at least one firearm owner! On July 1st 1837 Major General Wilkinson transferred title to Nicholas ceding it to him from his father Robert Wilkinson who had acquired it from John Richardson on August 25th 1792 according to Payne’s map #2 [1]. The first settler in what became Bloomington was Nicholas who arrived on October 26th 1837 with his family from Canada via Buffalo Bayou[2] Nicholas built a log cabin on what is now Main Street near today’s IU campus[3]. He married Anna Prentice on December 12th 1840 at Elmira Baptist Church[4]. They had six children: Alexander (1841-1912), Mary Jane (1843-1920), Sarah Jane (1845-1924), Anna Catharine(1847-1926)> Sarah Katherine(1849-1927)[5], George Stephen Nichols Jr.(1851-)and Helen Elizabeth Nichols(1853-) On December 16th 1847 Northrop Frye purchased two hundred acres southwest corner lot between First Avenue South and Second Street for $40 per acre[6] which became known as “Frye Park” after Colonel Nathaniel Frye who donated it in 1886 to Mennonite Central Committee for religious use followed by Presbyterian congregation Stake Paper Mill Company which used it until 1957 when ownership passed through various families until 1984 when it came into public ownership under current name “Bloomington Parks & Recreation Department” [7].
