Blaine is a town in Mayo County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. It has been the seat of Mayo County since 1881. The first settler in what is now Blaine was John Hargrave. Hargrave built a cabin on the present site of Blaine in 1827. A post office called "Hargrave" was established in 1828, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1881, the county seat of Mayo County was moved from Hargrave to Blaine. At that time, the population of Blaine was just over 100 people and its only industry consisted of agriculture. However, during the early 20th century, new industries began to develop in Blaine; these included shipbuilding and manufacturing. In 1923, construction started on what would become known as the Mayo County Courthouse which remains one of Blaines most important landmarks today. During World War II, many residents took up arms to help fight against Nazi Germany; this led to increased production within the local shipyards and businesses owners were able to donate large sums of money for war purposes. After the war ended, many residents returned home and began rebuilding their lives after years away from their homes; this included returning to farming practices and heavy reliance on transportation due to lack of roads or other infrastructure at that time. Today, with more than 2200 residents living within its borders (or reaching out into neighboring towns), Blaine continues to be an important community both locally AND nationally – thanks largely to its rich history!
