When people started to arrive in the area that is now Bemidji, Minnesota in the mid-19th century, they were looking for a place to settle. They didn’t know how to make coffee and thought that it would be impossible. The first Europeans who came to Bemidji were Dutch settlers, so they didn’t have any coffee beans and had no idea what they were doing. However, over time, some of the Scandinavians who had come here started making their own coffee and soon there was a thriving business going on. The first group of Germans who moved into this area also started making their own coffee. Over time, more and more people from other parts of the United States came here to find work in the burgeoning coffee industry. By 1930, there were so many businesses operating in Bemidji that it was decided that it would be an ideal location for a national Coffee Roastery Scheme (). This program aimed to help small businesses get equipment and supplies needed for making quality cup of Joe (). Today, the town has a rich history worth preserving as its economy has grown steadily since becoming an incorporated city in 1973.
