Bemidji, Minnesota is a town in the U.S. state of Minnesota. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. Bemidji is located on the southern shore of Lake Superior and is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Bemidji were French traders in 1635-36 and Jesuit missionaries in 1640-41 who named it "Beresford" after Sir William Beresford, Governor of New England during the reign of King Charles II. The name may have been derived from an Algonquian word meaning "place where game is found." The first settler in what became Bemidji was Nicholas LaFontaine in 1857, followed by his brother Maurice LaFontaine in 1859; both men had come from Canada as part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition led by Captain James Kappes. In 1870, Averill Cushman bought 640 acres (240 hectares) adjacent to present day Bemis Heights for $10 per acre ($4 million today). He began farming corn, potatoes, wheat and other vegetables then cattle until he leased land east of town to Timothy Hilstrom in 1876 for lumbering operations that would become Triton Lumber Company (). In 1886, Cushman donated 1/2 acre (0.25 hectare) to be used as a public park which remains today known as Cushman Park (). On July 8, 1898 Mabel Dodge Smith married Alfred Iverson at Griggs Chapel in Bemis Heights; they had met while working together on a trip through Wisconsin en route back home to Detroit Michigan on May 9th 1897 (). They moved into their first house on Prairie Avenue near County Road No 36 within weeks after their wedding and soon afterward opened a grocery store () across from Griggs Chapel with help from her father Darius Smith Sr.; this business would eventually become known as Smith’s Grocery Incorporated (). A fire destroyed most of downtown Minneapolis on November 22nd 1906; many people were displaced including some who lived near Girdwood Mall before moving into new homes around mile marker 216 off Interstate 94 (). On October 3rd 1907 Alfred Iverson built the first gasoline station west of downtown Stroudsburg (), which served motorists travelling eastbound along I-94 between Duluth and Farmington Hills (); this station still stands today inside Girdwood Mall off State Highway 10 (). In 1909 Charles Fenton added electric lights to muchneeded streetscape improvements Downtown Minneapolis including Harrison Street between 2nd Ave S & 3rd Ave S (); these streetlights date back to 1924 when they were installed by PEMCO Railway Company () under contract with City Hall Commissioners Lucius Noyes and John Wanamaker . On July 4th 1916 city commissioners passed resolution condemning property values north of Harrison Street due to growth spurt following World War I (); this condemnation remain applicable today with development taking place southward along Harrison Street . After years being blacklisted for refusing coal shipments West Side White Settlement residents voted themselves representation on North Dakota's state legislature starting January 15th 1921 via recall election against incumbent Republican members George Ewing and Jens Weidemeier ; representatives representing North Dakota's Black community would serve until 1959 when all representative seats were replaced by Keith Ellison who currently represents Minnesota's First Congressional District since 2004
