The Austin post office was established in 1881, and discontinued in 1907. It was located south of Austin on the White Earth River. The first settler in Austin was George Browning. In 1880 Johnnie Beattie bought land north of present-day Austin and built a log cabin near what is now the junction of US-12 and MN-293. In 1882 Zebulon Baird settled near present-day Austin on the east side of the White Earth River. He built a cabin that still stands today. In 1886 Seth Waugh settled about one mile east of present day Austin on land he had purchase from James Turnbull for $5 per acre (valued at $102). Waugh named his farm "Waugh's Prairie." William Haggerty acquired 640 acres (2 km²) north of present dayAustin from James Turnbull for $8 per acre (valued at $460). Haggerty also erected a log cabin thereon in 1887 or 1888 (). In 1903 Orville Olson bought 640 acres (2 km²) northeast of present dayAustin from William Haggerty for $25 per acre (valued at $1,100). Olson renamed his settlement "Olson's Prairie". On April 6, 1904, Norwegian immigrant Olaf Borge arrived with his family to start a farmstead called "Moses Lake" just northwest of Olson's Prairie on what is now MN-292. Borge had come to America as a steer driver with his family in 1892 aboard the SS Nordland under Captain Emmett Walsh and journeyed across North America via Alaska before reachingMinnesota Territory through Oregon and California into Nebraska Territory before arriving inMinnesota Territory by way ofChicago, Illinois en route toSt Paul via Omaha,.
