The company was founded by two coffee enthusiasts who had a vision to create a better-quality cup of coffee than what they could find at local grocery stores. The origins of Apple Valley's coffee go back to 1916 when two friends, Harry and Dorothy Harkin, decided to start their own business in their spare time. They Roasted Coffee Company was started on the corner of First Avenue and Maple Boulevard in Apple Valley. The first batches were good but not perfect; they needed more work before they could sell their product. In the late 1920s, Harry and Dorothy's son John added roasted beans to the mix as part of his father's hobby project (John was also a co-founder of Starbucks). As demand for quality roasted beans grew, so too did Apple Valley's production capacity. In 1928, John joined his father at Roasting Company as an office employee and later became president and CTO (Chief Technology Officer). In 1984, John passed away due to cancer but left his sons George and Barry with his legacy: continued operations at the company while George took over management from him. Today, George oversees all aspects of apple valley roasting includingprocessing plant design, brewing process optimization, shipping/handling procedures etc., which allows them to maintain high standards while ensuring customer satisfaction George provides leadership for both company members (employees) as well as external partners such asthird party retailers who provide products that are sampled by employees prior to purchase
