Anoka is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 13,895 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County. The first known permanent settler in what is now Anoka was Jacob Sorenson in 1854. The town site was chosen by surveyors and commissioners on November 3, 1857; it was formally incorporated as a village on January 1, 1865. The name Anoka comes from an Indian word meaning "place where the Buffalo grazing can be found." At first it consisted of only men and their families, but soon others came to live there as well. By 1870 there were 1,500 people living in Anoka. In 1898-99 a small hydroelectric power plant was built near present-day Mankato by the Eastern Electric Company for use by farmers west of St Paul who could not get electricity from Minneapolis or Minneapolis-Saint Paul because of high costs and unreliable power lines. In 1901 the company became part of Northern Electric Company with headquarters at 210 First Avenue South in Minneapolis (or perhaps 5th Street South), across from Central Seminary which had been founded as the University of Minnesota some years earlier by landowner Andrew Carnegie and his associate John Davenport Jr.. A new courthouse was built between 1915 and 1917 to replace an older one that had burned down two years earlier. That same year saw the founding ofthe National Rural Life Insurance Association (NRLA) here in Anoka as part of a national movement to provide social insurance for rural Americans during World War I; NRLA still operates today as MNsure! In 1926 Anoka's largest employer when measured by payrolls—and until 2009 its biggest single contributor to local coffers—was Northern Natural Gas Company with operations throughout northwestern Minnesota including production facilities at Canby Dam and Pickle Lake dams on Superior River just east of downtown Anoka—northwest corner of Ramsey County adjacent to Isanti County where Duluth is located; gas production increased rapidly after WWII due to reactivation/reactivation following World War II shortages caused by atomic bombing obliterating large areas across America! That company went bankrupt within a few years followed by other gas producers nearby also going under during this time period such as Enbridge Energy which bought out Northern Natural Gas Company assets several times over following regulatory woes brought about primarily through environmental concerns about oil spills resulting from increasing tanker traffic along North Shore Line Drive situated right outside town limits!
