Anoka, Minnesota is a city of over 100,000 people and it has been home to coffee roasters for over a century. It’s no wonder that Anoka Coffee Roasters has such a rich history. The first coffee roaster in Anoka was founded in 1876 by two men named John and Augustus Fitch. They roasted coffee beans on their family farm until about 1920. When the opportunity for business grew too much for them to continue running their own farm, they decided to sell their coffee beans to other businesses. In 1951, The Minneapolis Star-Tribune started printing the papers in Anoka and began publishing an agricultural section called “The Farmer”. This allowed the townspeople of Anoka the chance to see their local crop from a different perspective and help support the roaster. In 1982, The Fitch family sold their business interest in Anoka Coffee Roasters to brothers Bob and Tom Hanson. They continued to run the business as co-owners until its sale in 1998 to George Atallah Jr.. Atallah ran the company until his death in 2003. His son George Atallah III took over operations after his father’s death. In 2007, George Atallah Jr.'s widow donated all of her assets (including the company) back into public hands as part of an effort to promote sustainable farming practices at the company

Anoka is home to the first coffee shop in the United States and also one of the oldest continuous coffee-producing areas in the world. The first Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf was opened in Anoka on January 17, 1971.

Anoka is a city in the U.S. state of Minnesota, located on the Anoka-Hennepin County line. The population was 27,724 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hennepin County and is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. The name "Anoka" comes from an Ojibwe word meaning "the place where there are many birch trees." The first settlers were Norwegian immigrants who arrived in 1854 and named their new town Nokka after their home country. They started farming land around what is now Anoka and Nokka Lake, but soon realized they needed more water so they built a dam that still stands today. In 1915, local citizens decided to rename their city after Republikan president Woodrow Wilson because he had helped them during World War I and they saw him as a symbol of American democracy. The city was incorporated on February 14, 1912, by order of Governor James Mankato. It grew quickly due to its location, good transportation connections, and affordable housing prices which made it an attractive place to live for both residents and businesses alike. By 1920, Anoka had over 120 businesses with a total payroll of $2 million dollars! Today, Anoka remains one of the most vibrant cities in Minnesota thanks to its strong economy and diverse cultural attractions including museums such as the Mayo Clinic campus and Saint Anthony’s Park/Minnesota State Fairgrounds
