Andover is a town in Dakota County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,476 at the 2010 census. Andover is part of the Minneapolis–St. Paul metropolitan area. Andover was founded in 1881 by Danish immigrants and their families who had come to America to work on the new railroad. The name "Andover" first appeared on a map in 1885. The town began as a small agricultural community with about 100 residents. By 1912, however, Andover had become an important transportation center with its own railway station and several stores and businesses. In 1925, Andover became one of the original townships within Dakota County when it was organized from parts of neighboring rural areas. During World War II, Andover played an important role in the aircraft production industry by producing military planes for the USAAF and other Allied forces. From 1944 until 1948, Andover also served as headquarters for the United States Army Air Forces' Tenth Air Force (Tenth AF). The current incarnation of Andover began to take shape during the late 1960s when many farmers abandoned their fields and decided to move into larger homes instead of farmhouses which were becoming more common in those days among American farmers feeling pressure from suburban development around them. As they moved into newer homes they built streets that ran perpendicular to their home lot line creating what is now known as "The Loop". Some people still refer to this today as "the old days." In 1969-1970 three churches were built in what are now known as Lowertown (later labeled North Town) - First Presbyterian Church (now called ChristChurch), Second Presbyterian Church (now called United Methodist), and Third Lutheran Church (now called Emmanuel Lutheran).
