These donations helped make Alexandria one of America’s most capable naval cities during that time. In addition to their vessels, these ships also provided education and training programs for ALEXANDRIA NAVY ACADEMY students as well as staff members of U.S Navy installations around the country. In 1824 she was sold to Alexandria, Minnesota, and became a part of the local militia. The Constitution was decommissioned in 1865 and donated to the Minneapolis Public Library system where she is currently on display.
Alexandria is a small town in the heart of Minnesota. The population was 5,713 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Alexandria-Hennepin County School District. The community is located on the banks of the Mississippi River and has a busy downtown scene with art galleries, a farmers market, and several restaurants. The first Europeans to come to Alexandria were French traders in 1684. From here they started trading posts upriver until they reached present day Minneapolis in 1763. The Treaty of Paris which ended the American Revolution gave France control over much of what is now Minnesota and much of Illinois as well. In 1854, when Alexander Ramsey became sheriff of Hennepin County, he built his home on land that now lies within Alexandria's boundaries. His wife was later buried there as well. The town began as just a few homes along the riverbank with some business venture by local farmers started in 1865 when steamboats went downriver carrying goods from Stonington to Minneapolis. In 1870, there were about eighty people living in Alexandria when it incorporated as a village under its own government headed by an elected board of trustees with mayor and five members appointed by governor John Andrew Morton Sr.. It wasn't until after World War II that mass development truly took hold with businesses starting up like JCPenney (founded 1912), General Mills (1932), KFC (1937), Sears Roebuck & Co.(1946) and Macy's department stores opening up around 1950s-60s including JCPenney USA (founded 1948).
