The Alexandria National Guard was organized on May 15, 1921. The unit was made up of men from Alexandria, Ramsey County and parts of Dakota Territory. The purpose of the National Guard in Minnesota was to provide a reserve force for the state government and to provide law enforcement services during times of insurrection or civil disorder. The first guard unit was composed of men from Alexandria and Ramsey County, with only a few soldiers coming from Dakota Territory. The unit served in various capacities until 1932 when it was re-organized as a regiment-sized guard organization. In 1940, the regiment became an battalion and in 1964 it became an brigade. Today, the Alexandria National Guardsmen are one of the oldest national guard units in Minnesota. They serve as security for courthouses, state capitols and other governmental buildings across the state. This service includes providing backup for local police officers during emergencies such as riots or demonstrations. National Guard members have participated in many wars including World War II (1939-1945), Vietnam (1975-1979),Operation Desert Storm (1991-1994) and Operation Neptune’s Spear (1998). Additionally, they have been called upon to help bolster local police departments during homeland security exercises such as “Secure our Streets” campaigns or terrorism scares throughout the Twin Cities area. In recent years, there has been increasing concern over how well equipped national guardsmen are to protect our nation's capital city should something occur outside the normal parameters of public safety that would require them to respond quickly and effectively. One issue that has become more pressing is their lack of armor against improvised explosive devices (IEDs). While armor protection is important when defending military installations like Joint Base Lewis-McChord or Fort Snelling against insurgent attack, IED resistance can be much harder since these devices often contain nails rather than metal plates which can cause extensive injury or death if mishandled. To date, no full scale IED attack has occurred within downtown Minneapolis but this does not mean that protection measures have not been put into place; after all areas near downtown have seen several attempted bombings between 2006 and 2009 only two were successful: one at Main Street & 7th Avenue S., another at Target Field just north of Target Mall before being thwarted by bomb squad troopers officer Donny Deason; both incidents took place days after large protests had taken place in response to Mike Dukakis' decision not to run for President against George W Bush .

Each battalion is composed of approximately 350 enlisted men and women who drill together as one unit on an annual basis. These reserve components provide essential resources for national security operations both domestically and abroad whenever called upon to deploy anywhere in America or beyond.
