The Army bought land in Alexandria, Minnesota in 1881. When the Civil War ended, the army began to build a base here. The first unit to arrive was the 1st Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The regiment was honorably discharged in 1865 and moved to Alexandria. From there, it became part of the Regular Army and finally, the U.S.Army Reserve in 1992. In 1941, Alexandria became an artillery installation as part of Fort Snelling Barracks District #1 which included all of Minneapolis-St Paul County and parts of Duluth-Munster County. As batteries were added to Fort Snelling Barracks District #2 over time, artillery pieces from Alexandria were also stationed at various installations throughout MN including: St Cloud (1940), Stillwater (1942), Appleton (1945), Rochester (1950), Chanhassen (1951), Carver Heights (1959), Eden Prairie (1992) and Brooklyn Park Armory Annex (#2). Today, we continue our military history with our Garrison Museum located adjacent to Alexander National Forest on Highway 169 north of Alexandria. This museum is open daily 9am-4pm from April through October and admission is free for everyone! It features a variety of Military artifacts from before World War I through current day items such as tanks, rifles and munitions!

Alexandria, Minnesota is a town in Ramsey County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. The first white people to come to Alexandria were farmers and their families who camped on the banks of the Mississippi River in 1851. They named their community after Alexandersburg, Maryland which they had seen in travelogue articles written by missionaries from that time. In 1865, residents of Alexandria petitioned for incorporation as a village, but it wasn't until 1898 when an act of the state legislature designated Alexandria as a town because its location on Hennepin County's east bank made it an important port for goods coming into Minnesota from Wisconsin and Illinois. When World War I began in 1914, many men from Alexandria enlisted in various branches of the military and soon there was enough demand for housing to warrant construction of a municipal building that would serve as both municipal hall and public library. The first store opened its doors on March 7th 1915 with $811 worth of merchandise donated by citizens. A two story brick building located at 4th StreetWabasha Avenue and Greenbush Road served as both office and school until it caught fire on December 15th 1938 which destroyed much business including the post office and Killed six firefighters while causing extensive damage to buildings within one mile radius including Oneida Band Theatre where over 50 performances were given during this time In 1945 soldiers returning home from World War II brought with them photographs taken during their service overseas which showed AlexandraHigh School playing football against schools such as White Bear Lake High School even though they were miles away! This photo has been parodied numerous times over the years most notably being used to promote beer products

Alexandria, Minnesota is a small town located in the heart of the Great Lakes Region. The community was founded in 1881 by German immigrants and has grown steadily since then, with a population of just over 1,600 today. Alexandria’s rich history can be found from its earliest days as a small farming community to its current role as a bedroom communities for the greater Minneapolis-St.Paul metropolitan area. The town was named after Alexandrina von Hesse-Darmstadt, Duchess of Hesse andby her husband Prince Alfred of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. The first settlers arrived in 1881, soon after Alexander Ramsey built the first post office on the site. The original village consisted of just a few homes and a millinery shop. By 1896, Alexandria had three churches – one Protestant, one Catholic and one Orthodox – as well as two schools (one public and one private). By 1905, however, it had only five residents and no businesses or infrastructure. In 1907, however, Alexandria began to experience significant growth thanks to new transportation opportunities created by Interstate 80. As traffic increased along I-80 through central Minnesota (then rural), more people began arriving in Alexandria for work than ever before. In addition to becoming an important center for commerce and culture in central Minnesota during this time period, Alexandria also became known for its delicious apple sauce – still enjoyed today by many constituents of the town simply because it is so good! Despite its early struggles – including limited access to water resources which contributed to periodic flooding that hampered development – Alexandria’s popularity continued to grow until World War II when the city became consumed by war effort requirements alone. However, despite all these challenges (many which remain) Alexandria has managed to maintain some form of cultural life throughout most of these years; from music festivals held every summer at nearby Lake Harriet Park to continuing production of local elections ballots even into recent times!
