The station would later become theantennacenter for NAS Minneapolis-St. Paul. In 1947, the Naval Air Station (NAS) at Albert Lea became a Fleet Marine Force Base (FMF). This gave the station a much wider berth within the navy and allowed it to grow in size and capability. With its new capabilities, NAS Albert Lea also began offering civilian air traffic control services as well as providing storage andtenance facilities for naval Aviation equipment. In 1951, NASAlbertLea became an Aircraft Control Tower (ACT). This marked a turning point in NASAlbertLea's history as it became one of the most important military installations in Minnesota. ACT was responsiblefor all ground control operations for Naval Aviation units operating out of NASAlbertLea including both jet bombers and helicopter aircraft. The first jet bomber squadron stationed at NASAlbertLea was VF-2C "Gladiators" which arrived on site on 1 October 1951. The squadron operated Lockheed P-3 Orion maritime patrol planes until their retirement in 1976 after missions flown over North America from Newfoundland to Alaska with flew more than 5 million miles! The second squadron equipped with jets was VF-4C "Hercules" which arrived on site on 15 May 1954 followed by CVG-5A "Golden Eagle" on 16 May 1954 which served as the first helicopter squadron stationed at NASAlbertLea! These squadrons were complemented by VC-1A " Rainbow" which arrived on 8 November 1955 followed by CVG-6A "Pine Leaf". On 2 January 1956, NRL announced its decision to place Naval Air Station(NAS) Albertle intoactivated status effective 7 February 1956 followingthe end of hostilities between United States Navy and Japanese Imperial Navy during World War II! Subsequently, all activity related to NAVY at Albertle ceased without any further notice or explanation! One possible reason why this may have occurred is that there were plans underway to realign many of NASAlbertLee's subordinate commands under Commander Destroyer Squadron Three Five Zero locatedat Pearl Harbor Hawaii while also mothballing USS Enterprise (CVN 66) although no such orders ever materialized! As a result of these changes, many old records associated with NAVY at Albertle may have been lost or destroyed in the transition period
