The area around Ypsilanti was also home to a number of mills that produced flour and other goods for local residents. As the city grew and more people moved in, they started buying things from the fishermen who had stayed behind. This led to the development of a trade relationship between Ypsilanti and its neighbours. Eventually, traders started shipping goods upriver all the way to Detroit using Ypsilanti as a staging ground. By 1900, there were over 100 businesses in town and it was said that “Ypsilanti is one of America’s leading industrial cities” (Klein). This growth caused problems for locals because it created too much demand for resources they couldn’t provide. However, this didn’t stop locals from trying to make some money off of maritime gifts. One example is an 1888 advertisement for a fishing net called the “Curse-Boat” which cost $5 (Schmidt). The net weighed around 50 pounds and could be used multiple times before needing to be replaced. It was advertised as being able to catch “the big fish” and said that it would take about two weeks for delivery (Klein). Another example is an 1893 ad for lobster pots which cost $5 each (Mosesburg Democrat). These pots were designed so that you could cook your own lobster instead of getting it pre-cooked with someone else. They were also advertised as being able to store food for several weeks at a time (Mosesburg Democrat). Despite these problems, sailors throughout Michigan donated items like radios, watches, anchors, boat parts, fishing gear, etc., all in order to support their community (Hellerstrom 9-10). In 1984 alone, marines contributed 2 tons of supplies (Marine Gallery) towards breast cancer research! This love story between marines and local citizens has continued through many generations – something that makes marine gifts such an important part of Ypsilanti history!

Ypsilanti is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the eastern shore of Lake Huron. The population was 17,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Livingston County and has a metropolitan area population of over 50,000 people. Ypsilanti's nickname is "The City That Would Not Die". Ypsilanti was founded in 1835 by John Prentice as a village on the banks of the River Rouge near what is now Midtown Detroit, and quickly grew into an important port for the Wolverine iron ore trade. The town was renamed after General George Washington Ypsilantis by his friend and fellow soldier Moses Cleaveland in 1847 to commemorate General Ypsilantis' victory at Red Fort against Napoleonic forces under Napoleon I in 1812. In 1870, it became part of Michigan Territory when that territory was created from parts of Ohio and Indiana. In 1873, it became part of Wayne County when that county was created from portions of Oakland and Macomb counties. The city experienced significant growth during World War II with its main concentration being in shipbuilding – including production of USS Enterprise (CVN-65), Battlecruiser Yorktown (CV-3) and Light Cruiser Detroit (LCL-2). However, following the war's end, employment in shipbuilding began to decline as new methods such as offshore drilling made larger vessels more affordable than traditional sailing vessels; this led to Glossy Necked Ships Inc., one of Michigan's largest employers until its closure in 1990. After years plagued by bankruptcy filings and layoff threats,[1] Ypsilanti regained some stability beginning in 2006 with passage through Michigan's House Bill 486 which provided $20 million for economic development projects within three years.[2] This included construction of a new downtown library building which opened in 2009,[3] as well as major renovations to several other local businesses such as Joe’s Pizza Place[4], McCutcheon’s Bar & Grill[5] and First United Methodist Church[6]. These investments have helped jumpstart revitalization efforts throughout much of downtown while also creating thousands high-paying jobs across many industries since then;[7] making Ypsilanti one OFM church’s fastest growing areas outside their home diocese since 2002! Today, there are plenty reminders that history never sleeps: just minutes away from downtown you can find two large cemeteries containing some 5 million graves each—the largest single graveyard eastof Chicago—and another smaller one right next door dedicated to military veterans dating back to World War II! Ypsilanti is a city in the US state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Wayne County and was founded on April 17, 1837, by fur trappers and traders with the mission of establishing a trading post at what is now the mouth of the Kalamazoo River. The town was named for John P. Ypsilanti, one of these early pioneers. In 1881, Ypsilanti became a city when it annexed part of Detroit. The population was 27,814 as of 2010. The first European to visit what is now Ypsilanti was Captain George Vancouver in 1792-93 when he explored the area between Lake Superior and Mackinac Island which later became Michigan Territory. He named several places along his route including Point Pelee (now Lansing), Green Bay (now Wisconsin), Erivoa (now Holland) and Kalkaska (now Muskegon Heights). After exploring this area for some time, he returned to England in 1795 with news that an American territory had been discovered east of Cadillac Lakes where he thought there might be rich natural resources such as timber or coal. This discovery led to more settlement in this area and soon after, Ypsilanti began its rise to prominence as a small fur-trading outpost on what would eventually become known as Macomb Township west of Detroit. In 1821, Joseph Storrs moved from Rochester, New York to become president pro tempore of the United States Senate; he remained in this position until his death in 1850. During his tenure as president pro tempore, Storrs supervised debates on important issues before Congress which served both as an opportunity for him to learn about parliamentary procedure and also opened up new political opportunities for Americans living outside New York City who could not travel upstate due to high costs or restrictiveULEs governing their behavior there (− see "John Fenton: A Biography" article). Storrs' successor James Kieft organized what would become known as The Second Great Migration – Irishmen following his own invitation during a congressional recess – moving many farmers from southern Ontario back into America via boats chartered by John Stevens Lewine who acted as agent for them upon their arrival (). Many Northern Catholics followed suit over time because they did not feel welcome within Protestant America under Washington's rule (+ see "The Catholic Dilemma" article). The influx of Irish immigrants changed Ypsilanti forever; it became one of America's most diverse cities with people from every corner Of the contry mingling together ($ see "A History Of Immigration To And From Michigan" article). During much OFthe 19th century Ypsilasiit WASDetroit's financial center due TOits huge shipments OF commodities destined FORNew Orleans AND other partsofthe U S + exports FROM its mills & shipyards ($ see "Michigan: A History" article ). However starting IN1889 Detroit began TO decline & declined even MORE AFTER WWI when auto production REALLY took off ($see "Detroit: An American Icon" article ) . However NOW ypilsilant has come BACK bigtime!
In 1834, the town of Ypsilanti was founded by David Lloyd and John Sutherlin. The first store in the town was built on what is now Michigan Avenue. It was operated by Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd until 1851 when it became a public school. In 1871, the town voted to become an incorporated community with a government made up of a mayor and four trustees who were responsible for all aspects of local life including education, justice, street cleaning, and fire protection. On November 2nd, 1872, Ypsilanti became the first city in Michigan to be granted chartered status as a municipality by the Michigan Legislature. The incorporation ceremony took place at City Hall on December 3rd. The city's first mayor was James Peele who served from 1870-1872 and again from 1880-1884. In 1898 Ypsilanti voters passed an ordinance establishing limits on liquor sales within city limits which lasted until 1933 when they were repealed due to prohibition efforts by then Governor Alfred Ladd . During World War II (1939-1945), construction began on I-94 which connected Detroit to Flint through Ypsilanti On October 1st, 1949 Ypsilanti voters passed an ordinance repealing Prohibition in the state of Michigan
