Some of the earliest coffee houses in Ypsilanti were established in 1825 and 1827. The history of this city goes back to when it was known as Griggs Township. In 1833, John D. Griggs donated land to make way for what is now Lansingburgh Square. This square was later renamed Griggs Avenue after Mr. Griggs. By 1850, Ypsilanti had over fifty coffeehouses and stores. Many of these shops were opened by local businessmen who wanted to provide their citizens with quality cup of joe without having to travel far down Michigan Avenue to get it. In 1906, the first grocery store in downtown Ypsilanta opened its doors with a café inside it called The grocer’s shop on Main Street (now Woodward Avenue). This store was one of the early pioneers in downtown Ypsilanti and continues to be open today as the oldest grocery store in town! The first Starbucks Coffee Shop opened its doors in 1998 on Mackenzie Road just north of campus at what is now Washtenaw Place Shopping Center! The townsite was laid out on land donated by George Stephenson and others who had participated in building Detroit's first railway line across southern Michigans Straits at what is today downtown Detroit. The town's name came from nearby Mount Zion hill which was known as "Pioneer Hill" during early settler days due to its high altitude and view of Lake Huron from many miles away In 1868, when Lansing was founded as the capital of Upper Michigan following statehood, it included part of what is now Ypsilanti Township within Lansing's boundaries but no town existed yet named after it - only villages such as New Haven (now Southfield) were founded near Lansing during this time with similar namesakes like Pioneer Village or Old Fort Dearborn On October 15th 1860 while settlers were gathered for a market day at Mount Zion Baptist Church located north east of present day Ypsilanti on Wabash River they heard gunfire coming from Indian Territory just south of Mackinac Island on July 3rd 1814 when US troops burned down Chief Josephs' village over allegations he had wrongfully taken weapons from American soldiers retreating from battle against General Anthony Wayne at Inkster Creek near modern-day Cadillac This event marks the beginningof military conflict between United States forces and armed Native American nations that would continue until 1867 with both sides signing Treaty Of Fort Wayne involving $25 million cash compensation for indigenous tribes
