One of the most popular and unique gifts that the USAF has given is the gift of air force service. Wyoming, Michigan and many other locations have seen an influx of USAF members in recent years, as a result of Operation Golden Globe. This military operation was a massive recruitment campaign to bring in new members for military service in Iraq and Afghanistan. The USAF has also given out air force clothing, items for special operations forces, insignia, and more. In “A History of Air Force Service Gifts to Western Michigan” by Dr. Donny Gummerman, it is mentioned that the Specialty Store at Grand Rapids AFB began selling Air Force servicemen's clothing in 1958 when Major General Curtis LeMay ordered that all American fighter aircraft be armed with missiles instead of cannon fire protection rounds. The store continued to sell air force clothes and equipment until 1992 when it closed its doors due to budget cuts by then- Defense Secretary Dick Cheney. In 2002, Air National Guard units stationed at Battle Creek Airport reopened their shop after being closed since 1991 due to budgetary cuts by then- President George W. Bush's administration. It was not until 2007 that they started stocking items such as uniforms for both the National Guard unit at Battle Creek Airport AS well as other USAF units across the state 2 miles away from the airport on I-96S near Niles Center mall which opened in 1997 as Grand Rapids International Airport (GRIA). At this location there are currently three USAF Units: two P-3C Orion Aircraft from Wright Patterson AFB OH; one KC-135 Stratotanker from Whiteman AFB MO; and one EA-6B Prowler from Ellsworth AFB KS). However closures are happening at GrIA non stop because lack of funding continues!

The United States Air Force has a long and varied history with the donation of airforce gifts. The first gift to the USAF was an engine from surplus RAF-2 Spitfires. In 1953, General Curtis LeMay presented a Gift of More than $1 million worth of equipment to the USAF in honor of First Lieutenant James H. Doolittle, Jr., who had flown the first atomic bombing mission over Japan. In 1958, General Leslie R. Groves presented a Gift of More than $5 million in aircraft and missiles to the USAF in honor of Colonel John C. Stennis, who had won the Nobel Prize for Physics for his work on nuclear weapons development. From 1951 through 1961, General George S. Patton donated more than $10 million to support USAF programs across five categories: science and technology research and development; air combat training; command and control; bomber operations; and missile warning systems/countermeasures (WASPs/CMBs). Beginning in 1978, following the resignation of President Jimmy Carter due to health problems, General Arnold gave financial assistance totalling More than $160 million for military procurement projects throughout FY 1981-FY 1984 inclusive (later renamed Army-Navy Intergovernmental Agreement). In 1990 an additional contribution totalling More than $30 million was made by MajorGeneral Michael J. Casey to further support joint program responsibilities within DOD as well as other agencies concerned with defense matters such as NASA & USISAF
