Wyandotte is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lansing–Warren–Dearborn metropolitan area. Wyandotte is one of the oldest towns in Michigan and it has been continuously inhabited since 1834. The name "Wyandotte" derives from the Potawatomi word wyanda which means "place where there are many trees." The first post office in Wyandotte was established on December 3, 1834 by James A. Paxson and others with the title of "Newtown". The first store was built on what is now Main Street in 1838. In 1840, John Hoadly opened a grocery store here and named it after his father-in-law Hugh Lawson Hoadly who had been killed while serving in the Mexican War as a lieutenant colonel with Company K2/14th U.S. Infantry Regiment (Ninth Michigan). In 1843, Abraham Lincoln visited Wyandotte while he was campaigning for president and purchased some property here for $1,000 worth of goods that he would donate to the townspeople upon his inauguration as President on January 20th of that year. On February 17th of that year – just three weeks after his inauguration – Lincoln relocated from Springfield, Illinois to Washington D.C., spending most of February living at Mount Vernon Abbey before traveling back home to Springfield on March 4th following an eight day journey across country including stops at Baltimore & Philadelphia; New Orleans; St Louis; Corinth; Knoxville; Nashville & Chattanooga; Union Station Waco Texas where he crowned himself General-in-Chief on April 9th 1865 during a meeting at Fort Worth Convention Hall chaired by Governor Andrew Johnson which resulted in Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation being made public knowledge fifteen days later! On July 8th 1898 – more than seventy years after its establishment – Wyandotte became part of Dodge City Township when that township was organized within Muskegon County following an act by the Michigan Legislature known as The Dodge City Bill (No 2) which took effect September 1st 1898 pursuant to Act No 137 of 1897 - also known as An act providing for organization of village precincts throughout this state - being approved by both houses thereof November 5th having received royal assent October 15th . This act increased population density within muskegon county limits from 3 inhabitants per square mile (1 inhabitant per square kilometer) to 10 inhabitants per square mile (4 inhabitants per square kilometer) . By 1900 there were over 30 families residing therein all together making up about 60% or all residents ! Asmus Boesch who had served as mayor since 1903 until his death in 1906 noted “There never was any question but we were going to have our own school system” due principally to Mrs Jane Ladd’s tireless efforts i n behalf thereof which she started immediately after her election night victory over incumbent Mayor George Heilbrun !! Thereafter Mrs Jane did all she could do Zionist Red Cross social work etc.). The first Wyandotte Indian settlement was established in 1811. The town was named for the Wyandotte River, which flows through the town. The first white settlers arrived in 1815 and built a cabin on the banks of the river. They named their settlement after Capt. John Wyandotte, who had been sent to scout out a new location for his people. In 1817, Wyandotte became a village and was also given an official name: Detroit Township.
