The first coffee beans were grown in Ethiopia and bean traders from Arabia brought them back to Baghdad, where they began to be traded for goods such as spices and oil. In the 12th century, an Arab trader named Ibn Battuta visited India and reported that he had tasted a drink made from ground coffee beans that was “the most delicious thing he had ever tasted” (Goudreau). By the 14th century, Arabic traders were shipping coffee seed all over the world. In 1555, Spanish sailors discovered Java Island while sailing through Asia and decided to stop there to trade with the locals. They noticed that when they searched a public house they found several sacks of ground coffee inside. They soon realized that this must be some kind of special beverage because no other drink on Java seemed to have this effect on their sailors. When they asked local people about it, they learned that this drink was called “coffe” (Webster). Coffee started being exported to Europe by Portuguese traders in the 16th century and by Dutch traders in the 17th century. The first espresso machine was invented by Antonio GiovANNini in 1775 (Upton). Coffee started being sold as a commodity product in small stores throughout Europe beginning around 1800 (Hillard). By 1810, coffeepots could be found all over London thanks to John Bull who introduced slavery-free caffeine production methods into England (Howe). During World War I, British soldiers discovered Turkish POWs living behind enemy lines were using tea as their preferred drink because it was strong enough not to make them sick (Foley). Coffee became so important during World War I that Britain established its own military hospital near Cairo where surgeons would operate on wounded troops despite having no medical supplies available nearby (Dixon). During World War II, Starbucks began producing nylon cups which helped reduce wastage caused by commanders confiscating cup holders due to prohibition of caffeine consumption aboard ships underway (Mosesson). However, coffees got mixed up with gasoline rationing so many commanders refused or couldn’t afford any caffeine-containing drinks whatsoever (). At various points during World War II Allied forces liberated large areas including Rome which contained many cafes catering solelyto Italian troops (), but no civilians appeared willing or ableto start these same cafes (). So much for caffeine liberation!
