Wixom, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the Ottawa River. The population was 43,815 at the 2010 census. Wixom's nicknames include "The City of Buttons" and "The City on the river". The city was founded in 1871 by John Denton and became a municipality in 1907. It has been part of the United States since 1959. Wixom is located in Lacrosse County and is bordered by Battle Creek to the north, Saginaw to the east, Orion to the south and Muskegon Heights to the west. According to the 2010 census, Wixom has a total area of , making it one of Michigan's smallest cities at just over . Wixom has a humid continental climate with cold winters and hot summers; precipitation ranges from during summer months to monthly lows below during winter months. According to historian Loren Coleman: "In 1871 John Denton erected his first log cabin on what would later become Main Street in this town...by 1880 he had built twelve log homes." Denton named his town after another early settler, James Wixon (1795-1868), who had immigrated from England in 1815 and settled near Detroit on Canisteel Creek near what is now downtown Detroit. By 1907, when Wixom became an incorporated municipality under state law, there were over 100 people living here including ten farmers who raised corn, hay and beans for local markets across Lacrosse County...Denton passed away three years before incorporation...the first meeting of council was held March 12th [1887]." In 1908 (the same year that Saginaw became an incorporated city), Main Street was widened from two lanes (now four) down to one width for economic development purposes; today it remains as one wide artery through town center with several small business districts lining its length). In 1912 Main Street was also designated as " avenue" which served as downtown's main commercial artery until 1974 when it was closed off easementually due to various rezonings within downtowns throughout metro Detroit resulting in increased traffic congestion along Woodward Avenue which led eventually to itsclosure as well...still retaining much about its traditional character - such as sidewalks laid out perpendicular to each other rather than parallel - are some notable features remaining today along Main Street between Bankside Drive and Park Row." Most recently Main Street underwent significant designation changes - having been renamed Oldtown Square following heavy redevelopment taking place adjacent thereto beginning in earnest around 2006 - but many aspects still remain unchanged including blocks long straight streets flanked by tall buildings characteristic of older American towns like these typical examples found throughout inner-city cores around North America serving similar functions both past & present day
Wixom was founded on February 14, 1837 by George Wixom and his wife Anna. The town was named for William Wordsworth, an English poet who wrote about the Lake Superior region. The first post office in Wixom was established on March 1, 1837. On September 9, 1838, the town organized as a village. In 1840, the village incorporated as a city and received its first street name - Michigan Avenue. In 1865, Wixom became a state capital when it was moved from Harrison to Lansing.
