Wixom is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wixom traces its roots back to 1824 when a group of settlers from New York City founded what would become Wixom, Michigan on land that now includes downtown Wixom and parts of other neighborhoods such as Haggerty Park and Central Park West. The town was named after Nicholas Young Wixum (1786–1854), an early settler who had purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) near present-day Gratiot Avenue and Ionia Street in 1824 from John Richardson for $2,000 cash. The first post office opened in 1827 and was renamed Wixom after Nicholas Young Wixum's son Amos Neely Wixon (1802–1885). A canal was built through central Wixom in 1830 which led to increased trade throughout the area; this helped make Wixom one of the most prosperous small towns in Michigan during the 19th century. In 1861, during American Civil War, local militia forces fought against Union General George Armstrong Custer at Battle Creek; as a result, many residents withdrew their support for Custer following his victory over Union troops at that battle. In 1870, Dearborn County was created from parts of Wayne County; because Dearborn included much of southeastern Michigan including portions of Oakland County, it became necessary for Dearborn officials to appoint commissioners to manage both counties. Accordingly, on November 14, 1870 – just two weeks after Michigan's first general election held under the new state Constitution – Commissioners John Swayne (D) and James Laughlin were elected by popular vote to serve out three-year terms as commissioners for Dearborn and Oakland Counties respectively; these positions were then filled by future governors George Romney (R), Norris Wright (D), Richard Mather (I) – all members of the Republican Party – until 1933 when they were replaced by Democrats William Jennings Bryan and Franklin D Roosevelt as part of gubernatorial appointments made during Franklin D Roosevelt's first term as governor in 1933.
