The first settlers in what is now Wixom were farmers who arrived around 1800. A post office called "Winxom" was established in 1847, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1901. In 1892, the city was incorporated as part of Lansing Township; it formally became a city on November 5, 1998. The primary cultural attraction for residents and tourists are two large collections of woodcarving done by local artists over many years: the Rochester Institute of Technology Museum's collection from 1906-1907 and the Detroit Institute of Arts' collection from 1913-1920. Other attractions include several parks with monuments to General George Washington Carver (1864-1941), Jesse Owens (Birmingham, Alabama), Flintstones creator Steven Spielberg (brought over as part of his father's move to Southern California), and other famous people who have lived or visited here such as singer Judy Garland (from London) and actor/comedian Arnold Schwarzenegger (from Germany). Some notable buildings located within walking distance or close by include Main Street United Methodist Church which has been built on land donated by Reverend John Crampton in 1865; Ford Plant which opened up in 1915 filling an important need for automotive production after World War I; Wissman Building now used as apartments; First Christian Church - also built on land donated by Reverend John Crampton - dedicated on October 17th 1922; Masonic Temple - also built on land donated by Reverend John Crampton - dedication took place on May 15th 1924; Haggerty School now used for elementary school purposes - opened in 1907 adjacent to First Baptist Church also founded that year; Uptown Shopping Center just southwest Of Main Street used as shopping mall during past years but is no longer open today due to fire damage caused by lightning strike about 20 years ago

The population was 16,255 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Oakland County and one of the most populous cities in Michigan. The area that would become Wixom was originally inhabited by Muskegonan Native Americans who ranched and hunted there for centuries before coming under European influence via fur traders and missionaries. The town was founded on a small square mile (1 km²) of land east of what is now Midtown Detroit on July 12, 1836 by Quincy Mott and others from Wabash Company No. 1 as part of an effort to settle what had been seen as a wilderness region along the Grand River between Detroit and Flint. In 1837, General Motors began construction on its first factory in what would become Wixom – GM’s first major industrial site outside of Detroit – with help from local entrepreneur George Stephenson. By 1840, it hadgrown into one of the largest towns in western Michigan with over 10,000 residents; however, due to heavy industry growth during World War II (and other factors), Wixom’s population gradually declined until reaching its current size around 16,255 in 2010. The history of Wixom can be traced back to 1836 when Quincy Mott organized an expedition led by himself and James Hutton to explore new lands west of present-day Detroit where they believed they could find fertile ground for agriculture using native methods developed among their Muskegonan ancestors thousands years earlier. After descendingriver for several weeks following their journey up the Huron River they reached a small band encampment known as “The Pigeons” near modern day Battle Creek Township off US 12 about 6 miles (10 km) northeast of downtown Detroit on July 12th 1836 after spending three days traveling through dense forest which eluded them both previous expeditions including one led by John Caughnahan two months earlier which also failed due to thick foggy conditions . They were joined soon afterwards by another group consisting primarily American Indians led by Chief Tecumseh which numbered only 50 warriors against 300 White men commanded by Colonel Lewis Cassius Dennison - president pro tempore United States Senate - commander general United States Army Northern Division under General Anthony Wayne.. The party set out exploring this virgin land that lay beyond any points previously explored or surveyed especially since no means existed then or now to determine its real extent... Mott determined that this area lying southwestwardly2ofthegrandriverwestofDetroitshould be granted unto him as his propriety became known... He called upon Geoge Washington appointed Judge Advocate General Department Territory Northwest Indiana Territory Dearborn Counties October 15th 1840 after hearing from three different individuals claiming interest therein viz Genl Washington Mother & Daughter Josephine Washington wife Mrs David Stroud 3 children Louisa Stroud daughter Mrs Samuel Griggs 4 children [ Names not given ]...A grant was made but difficulties arose because no water supply could be found within 100 miles so Mr Mott went ahead without assistance leaving behind hundreds dead game he had secured while exploring rapids below junction point with Huron river [ now Battle Creek] according to contemporary reports some people believe he may have gone too far upstream .. On November 5th 1841 A company composed wholly male citizens armed with shotguns volunteered themselves at Mr Mott house on Westmoreland Street just northwest corner Of Griggs & Masonic Streets procured firearms & started searching for Watermill Creek located about 8 miles northwesterlyofWixom Limits Major Ransom Hardware Company later opened store at intersection [now Saginaw Avenue] And discovered millrace running parallel To main street about 4 ½ Miles distant Thereafter subscribers collected millions dollars worth Of sawdust thereby starting mills available today Many settlers took up arms against Indian hostility becoming known as “Red Coats” during this time period It is said that even though many proved successful militarily Natives still managed to kill many whites settlement grew slowly until 1850 when large influxes OF European immigrants changed social patterns leading eventuallyto DeclineBy1890 concurrentwithdecliningpopulationOfnativepopulationInMichigan CityUnderwent rapid expansion resultingin lossofthecityhood designation In 1933 city council passed ordinance providingFor incorporation Pursuanttothis ordinance new name:WIXOM CITY
