Wixom is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the eastern border of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan and on the western edge of Lake Huron. The population was 20,521 at the 2010 census. Wixom is part of the Grand Rapids–Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Wixom was Samuel Gregg, who arrived in 1824. Gregg's land bordered what is now Muskegon County to the south and east and included present-day Wixom to the north. He named his new community after Webster Township, New York, where he had been born two years earlier. A post office was established at Greggs Corners in 1827, and it continued to serve until it was discontinued in 1869 because no mail reached its customers there. Before 1800, most settlers near today's Saginaw were engaged in hunting or fishing operations; they did not build permanent homes until after white settlement began expanding into this area from Upper Canada during the early 19th century. In 1828, John Richardson purchased 640 acres (2 km2) along a branch of Little Traverse Bayou from Nicholas Kapp for $600 (). Richardson named his new township Richardsonstown after himself and developed it as a farming community with agriculture as its mainstay economy. By 1830, Richardsonstown had about 100 residents and a small store that sold goods such as flour and butter to local farmers; but by 1850, only 14 people lived there permanently and all were related toRichardson or his family members. In 1834–36, three men settling around what is now Saginaw led by Jonas Mireles surveyed an area extending northwest from today's Saginaw Township towards Grand Rapids; they called this tract "Wixom". They laid out a town square on lots they rented from local farmers with plans to erect buildings there for themselves while their families fished along Little Traverse Bayou seasonally; but within two years they realized that water power could be harnessed more effectively farther away so they abandoned their creation except for some public buildings which remain standing today: Town Hall (1835), Masonic Lodge (1836), Baptist Church (1837), Schoolhouse (1839), Warehouse (1841). However initial optimism about Wixom's possibilities quickly dissipated when traffic congestion caused by farmsteads being built closer to town became unmanageable; moreover development along Little Traverse Bayou proceeded unchecked because boatmen could navigate its waters without fear of Illegal Entry Acts enacted at that time by Governor John Prentice for preventing riverfront Development near busy ports like Detroit/Windsor etc.; Consequently business declined even further when steamboats became available for transportation instead steamboats transporting coal became available through SteubenvilleMichigan starting in 1840 . The decline may have been hastened by Federal laws passed soon thereafter requiring 60% ownership of all Big box stores by July 1st 1865 making retail selling difficult without company headquarters nearby . By 1860 just 10 people lived here permanently while all were related either directly or indirectly to one another including 3 brothers – David E., Solomon G., Horace – who also ran businesses together including grist mills & sawmills at Haggerty Mills & Paper Works southwest of town ..... these 4 brothers started White Street Depot which Transferring Mail From One House To Another Became A tradition In This Area ....... One Of These Brothers Also Started The First TV Station In This Area Called WWJ-(now WWTV) Which Is Still extant Today And Becoming More Popular Every Day
