The Wixom Air Force Base was established in 1940, and the United States Air Force has been stationed at the base since 1941. The present-day Wixom AFB is home to three major airfields: Hulman Field, which is used for fighter and bomber training; Wright-Patterson AFB, which provides strategic bombing support to allies; and Weldon AFB, which conducts aerial refueling operations. In 1954, the United States Air Forces Europe (USAFE) was activated at Wixom AFB. From then until 1973, USAFE was responsible for all NATO military forces located within Germany. In 1990, when NATO dissolved, RAF Heythrop became operational as a fully fledged USAF unit. Today RAF Heythrop remains an active component of the USAF with responsibility for both airfield security and other aerospace activities in south-central Michigan including Wixom AFB. That same year saw the activation of USAAFE which would become responsible for all NATO military forces located within Germany once again. The Wixom Air National Guard 191st Fighter Squadron was activated on Jan. 1, 1942 as the 191st Fighter Group at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The group was redesignated the 191st Fighter Wing on Feb. 20, 1942 and activated at Fairbanks Municipal Airport in Alaska on May 15, 1942. The wing was reassigned to Midway Island on Sept. 3, 1944 andactivated thereentirely. On Dec. 14, 1946 the wing was again redesignated as the 191st Bombardment Wing and concurrently assigned to Headquarters Air Forces Americas at Washington D.C., replacing the 310th Bombardment Wing which had been disbanded in 1945. On Aug 1, 1947 a separate command structure was established for Bomber Command when it became component of Strategic Services Agency under Defense Secretary James Forrestal with jurisdiction over all American bomber forces worldwide except for Strategic Air Command which controlled only strategic bombers within United States airspace The air wings were realigned on July 18th 1949 under control of Tactical Air Command with new mission "To provideairlift for limited military operations against selected targets by bombardment." Wixom is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 34,871 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Wayne County. Wixom is the primary center of residential and economic development in southeastern Wayne County, home to many small businesses and government facilities as well as large educational institutions and research organizations. The first mention of Wixom was in 1800 when an Indian named Wexford settled there with his family. In 1824, John Hull built a gristmill on the present site of downtown Wixom for $5 per barrel. In 1835, James Daugherty started a sawmill on the current site of Main Street and Westheimer Avenue; this mill continued to operate until 1893. A post office was established at Wixom in 1830, and remained in operation until 1959. The first store opened at what is now Broadway and Highland Avenue in 1836; this store became known as "The Old Mill". By 1840, most of what is now downtown Wixom had been developed along Main Street between Woodward Avenue (now State Road M-1) and Highland Avenue east of Woodward Avenue In 1890, local entrepreneur Isaac Naiman set up a grocery store on Second Street south of Main Street which soon became popular among local farmers because it offered fresh produce available year-round at low prices from his extensive garden plots near downtown Wixom. The grocery store also served as an early depot for mail sent from Detroit to southern Michigan through Cook County by wagonloads full of vegetables bought by rural residents who could not afford to buy them fresh from farm fields or markets In 1907, Alfred Plessy founded Plessy's Department Store on Park Row east of Third Street which soon became one of the largest department stores west of Chicago Plessy's increased business activities led him to build several other major department stores throughout southeast Michigan including Eastern Market Shopping Center on Ottawa Boulevard just north of I-75 exit 20 near Royal Oak Township headquarters and two blocks south on Fourth street across from Belle Isle Naval Air Station

In 1967, General Curtis LeMay gave Congress an Igloo cooler filled with hundreds of cans of Jet A1 fuel which he had acquired while leading Operation Neptune's Spear during the Vietnam War. The Igloo cooler remained in use until 1986 when it was replaced by a new model which still remains in use today. In 1985, General Omar Bradley presented a set of four golf clubs to the USAF Museum at Udorn Ranges in Thailand as part ofOperation Homecoming celebrations following America's victory in Southeast Asia. The golf clubs were donated by Captain Bill Fenton and remain today one of the museum's most popular attractions! In 1984, Major General William "Bear" Brunson presented two tickets to see Broadway play "Guys & Dolls" at Madison Square Garden as part ofthe Pentagon'denomination ceremonies celebrating America's First Amendment rights! This particular gift was chosen due to its sentimental value - Prior versions had been given away free at military installations throughout America! In 1977, Major General John Harriman presented three sets (one each)of American made radios worth $2,500 each to members stationed worldwide on behalf OFAC pursuantto Executive Order 12333which regulated commercial airline radioactivity levels! These radios were later auctioned off online for charity purposes! Each set included an interesting frequency range including CW (voice), AM/FM (broadcasting), VHF (viewing)and UHF (UFO watching). It is now thought that this particular generosity may have been motivated by Harriman knowing that many servicemen and women would be living exposed abroad without access to such important communications equipment!
