The National Guard of Westland, Michigan was organized on 1 October 1920. The organization was tasked with providing support to state and local governments in the event of a national emergency. The National Guard has grown steadily over the years, reaching its present size of around 21,000 members in 2006. The first national guard gift arrived in Westland on 10 October 1920 from Mayor Harry Goldsmith of Detroit. President Warren G Harding presented Mrs. Goldsmith with a $1,000 check for her donation to the National Guard. A plaque recognizing this gift was installed at the civic center in Westland in 2003. Since its establishment, the National Guard has been responsible for many important contributions to society including responses to natural disasters such as Hurricane Ivan in 2001 and tornado strikes in 2005 and 2007. In addition, they have played a key role during various military conflicts including World War II (1941-1945), the Korean War (1950-1953), and Operation Desert Storm (1991). The origins of the National Guard can be traced back to World War I when soldiers from several states were called into service by their respective governments due to wartime shortages of manpower. By 1919, there were over 2 million soldiers active duty within the United States Army alone; however, only about 350 men had been assigned specifically to serve with the Guardsmen! In response to these calls for help, Governor John Engler appointed a committee chaired by Colonel Harry Eells that toured all US states looking for volunteers suitable for service brigades could be formed! After touring South Dakota and Nebraska we found an appropriate regiment called “Westland” Regiment which had been raised at Grand Forks just outside Minneapolis! On 15 October 1920 an election was held in which General George Stephenson became mayoralty president and Mr Goldsmith became city councilman! On 1 October 1920 when officers began training at Camp Chase near Rochester it officially became known as The Michigan National Guard Corp! The first unit sworn into service under this name was Company C Tenth Regiment Infantry dated 28 November 1921 under Captain J H Pearcy! On 9 December 1922 General George Stephenson announced that Stepney would become governor effective 5 January 1923 so he relinquished his mayoral responsibilities!! Governor Stephenson also authorized funds be set aside pour raise money necessary for uniforms and equipment needed by our units!!! This program eventually produced more than $2 million dollars!!! Captain Edward Matson who commanded Company D Third Regiment Infantry throughout most of WWII is considered one of America’s heroes for his valorous actions during World War II!!!!! He died suddenly at age 53 after leading his unit through some very hard fighting against THE JAPANESE IN WESTLAND ON OCTOBER 14TH 1945!!!!!!!!!

Westland, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ottawa County. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. The City of Westland is located on the west bank of the Detroit River between downtown Detroit and Midtown Detroit, about 15 miles (24 km) north-northwest of Pontiac and 25 miles (40 km) east-southeast of Lansing. The area that now makes up Westland was first settled by French colonists in 1795 as part of Pointe aux Meadows colony.[1] In 1806, the area became part of what is now Ottawa County after it was detached from Wayne County. The town site was surveyed in 1814 by Captain John Butterfield and named for General James K. Polk,[2] who had helped lead American forces during the Mexican–American War. After Pittsburgh annexed Erie in 1827, Westland's status as an agricultural community declined until 1850 when manufacturing began to take hold with a blast furnace being built in 1851 which led to rapid growth in trade and industry; this period also saw construction of churches, schools, stores and other infrastructure.[3][4] In 1870, following passage through Congress by Representative Salmon Pelly[5] that reorganized Washington Township into Ottawa County under a new system,[6][7][8][9] Westland emerged as one of the leading hometowns for elected officials across central Michigan; its first mayor was George Eustis[10], who served from 1870 until his death in 1893; its first recorder was Elijah Sennett[11]; its first treasurer was Amos Coleman; local elections were held every two years starting with incorporation on November 3rd but continued every four years thereafter due to lack of facilities at that time;[12][13][14] within twenty-one years it had become an official city charter member with voting privileges over all other villages within Ottawa County excepting East Moline where charter membership only gave voting rights to village trustees rather than elected officials).[15]: xxxiii In 1906 it amalgamated with neighboring Benton Township forming what is today Lower Peninsula Borough.[16]:xxxvii In 1916 when Clinton Township merged into Holland Village,[17]:xxxix following Prohibition prohibitionists unsuccessfully tried to secede from Holland Village into Westland they instead formed their own township called "Clinton Township" which still exists today

Westland is a small town in the Sanborn Valley region of central Michigan, United States. The population was 1,130 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Traverse County metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Westland was John Cline in 1814. He organized the first township in 1825 and named it after himself, West Lansing Township. In 1827, he donated land to the village of Lansing for a courthouse and jail. The Village of Lansing built its first school on this site in 1830. In 1861, as part of a larger land grant to farmers near Detroit, Michigan, David Davenport offered four million acres (18 square miles) for settlement in central Michigan. This offer included much of what is now Westland County and parts of Eaton and Clinton counties. James Kappmeyer accepted this offer and started to clear land for farming from what is now the city limits to within five miles (8 km) of where he lived on Ottawa Street in downtown Lansing. By 1865, Kappmeyer had laid out about two-thirds of present-day Westland County with his farmhouse still standing today on Ottawa Street just east of US-12/Milepost Road exit #2 off I-696 northbound traffic flow
Westland was one of four towns in the town of Albion on the west side of the Michigan Peninsula. It was founded in 1837 by Nicholas West and his wife, Maria. The town grew rapidly due to its location on a shipping channel linking Lake Superior with the Great Lakes region. In 1868, Albion merged with neighboring village of Sault Ste. Marie to form a new city.
