Westland, Michigan is a small town in the Midwestern United States. The population was 2,574 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1836 by Major John Westland, who named it for his father, General John Westland. The first settler in what is now Westland was Daniel Ackerman and his family, who arrived in 1837. In 1840, James Sutherlin erected the first store on what is now I-96. By 1851, there were 10 stores and 1 hotel in town. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Westland sided with the Union side and lost its incorporation as a village because of this decision. In 1870–71 an experimental cotton gin was built at what is now East Main Street to process cotton imported from Tennessee by Genesee County residents Isaac Fenton and Elijah Hogg. This gin produced about 50 bushels per day until it burned down in 1901. After the war ended and Western Michigan became part of Indiana Territory following the end of the Civil War, many western white farmers began moving into eastern Michigan to take advantage of new irrigation techniques developed there by George Stephenson and others working on canals authorized by President Abraham Lincoln as part of his New Deal program in America's Great Migration (1886–1920). These farmers replaced earlier Native American cultivators who had been living near orchards and vineyards along rivers that emptied into Lake Superior/the St Clair River watershed through which travelers took supplies necessary for their subsistence journey westward across North America: flour from Illinois; meat from Nebraska; lumber from Wisconsin; potatoes from Minnesota; apples from Ohio; tobacco from Virginia; spices from Maryland—all delivered seasonally to Detroit via riverboats called "mugwagons."
