Westland is a small town in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,918 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Westland has a mix of recent and old residents who are all descendants of early settlers in the area. The Village of Westland was platted in 1868 and became a town in 1903. The first European to visit what is now Westland was Giovanni da Verrone, who named it "Verona" on July 3, 1569 after his visit to that city during his voyage from Italy to northern America. In 1812 Jean Baptiste Point du Sable explored what is now Oakland County while on his way from Ottawa to Detroit; he named it "Widewater Township". A post office called "Westland" was established in 1868, and remained in operation until 1958. In 1903, when village status was granted to Westland by the state of Michigan, it had a population of just over 100 people. That number grew rapidly through annexations by other towns within Oakland County as well as into neighboring counties over the next few decades: Allegany (1907), Clinton (1920), Highland Park (1927), Washtenaw (1930), Macomb (1934), Livingston Heights (1945), and Sterling Heights (1960). Today's west side of town began developing as farmers settled there starting around 1850 with large tracts along the Rouge River near today's Middlebelt Parkway and White Road/Route 9 between Belle Isle Road and Bloomfield Road; these tracts became known as Old Town or German Settlement #1 because most pioneer families were originally from Germany or Northern Austria." One reason why this area developed so quickly may have been due to its close proximity to natural resources such as good water quality for farming and mineral rights found nearby including lead mines which still operate today outside of town limits despite being closed for more than 50 years according as per EPA regulations implemented back then: “As late as 1960 Lead Mines Regulation No. 6 did not apply within Wayne County because no claims had been made for land within those boundaries since before 1855” .
