Westland is a city in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2000 census. The city is part of the Grand Rapids–Muskegon-Oakland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Westland was first settled by the Potawatomi people in the 1800s. In 1836, Westland became part of Muskegon County when it was organized from part of Wayne County. In 1871, the town of Highland was established in what is now Westland and it remained a small community until 1959 when it began to grow rapidly due to its location on State Route 231 and its proximity to Grand Rapids. In 1961, Highland merged with neighboring townships to form Westland Township which continues to grow today. In 1984, Westland lost its status as an incorporated municipality and became an unincorporated village under state law. However, because of its growing size and importance as a commercial center within Muskegon County, both villagers and state officials have continue to call themselves "WestLAND".

Westland, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 26,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. In 1837, John Sibley erected a mill on the Huron River near what is now Westland as part of his cotton plantation holdings in this area. The first post office was established in 1838, and by 1840 there were five stores and two hotels in town. The name "Westland" came about because when settlers surveyed this area they found that all of it lay west of Battle Creek and east of Grand Rapids (now Muskegon Heights). In 1847, George Stephenson built a railroad from Detroit to Westland through what is now Muskegon Heights and Scio townships; it was completed in 1850. This helped make Westland an important center for trade during the late 1800s and early 1900s. One notable resident during this time was entrepreneur Wm Henson who started four banks in town between 1898-1901; he also served as president pro tempore of the Michigan Senate from 1903 to 1905. In 1914, World War I began with Germany invading Belgium; as result, many factories closed down throughout Western Michigan due to wartime production restrictions. By 1917, however, most businesses had reopened and unemployment had decreased significantly thanks to government stimulus programs such as price controls enacted during that year's war effort. However, by 1922 things had begun to unravel withThe Great Depression taking hold across much of America; soon after that date Westland experienced its first crime wave which caused many businesses to close their doors completely or go out of business altogether (in contrast Greater Lansing only saw 2 homicides per 100K residents from 1923-1929). After years of economic stagnation following World War II there was some resurgence activity starting around 1960 when companies such as Wayne State University became major employers in downtown WestLAND During this time new housing developments were being built throughout Downtown areas including Wind Dale Village which opened up along Woodward Avenue just north/west of downtown westlan
The area that is now Westland was first settled in 1835 by John Armstrong and his family. The community name was derived from the land they donated to the government for the purpose of organizing a township. The society formed to set up the town, named it Westland Township, and gave its charter to the Michigan Territorial Legislature on November 3, 1837. On December 16, 1839, Westland Township had a population of only 10 residents. By 1840, however, it had grown to 27 residents and on May 6th of that year it obtained its first ballot box. On July 1st of that year it became an incorporated village with a population of 100 people. It held its first election on October 7th of that year and chose as its first Mayor Isaac Ellington who served for three years. In 1850s two other towns were founded in what is now west-central Michigan: Battle Creek and Howellville. In 1861 Battle Creek became part of Detroit after the US Civil War while Howellville remained a village until 1959 when it merged into Detroit
