The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Westland, Michigan in 1942. The gift was the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft. The P-47 was a highly advanced fighter aircraft that had been designed for theAAF during World War II. The Thunderbolts were initially used by the USAAF as part of the European Theater of Operations and were very successful. The first Thunderbolt flights took place on February 9th, 1942 and soon after began operations against Nazi Germany. The Thunderbolt was quickly become one of America’s most popular fighter planes. It had great performance and Canuck pilots were some of the best in the world. In 1945, when World War II ended, many Thunderbolt pilots served in Japan where they flew the Nakajima A6M Zero air superiority plane. Later that year, on October 25th, 1945, Captain James “Jimmy” Henson became an ace with the USAAF while flying a Thunderbolt over Japan with No 1 Squadron RAFVR (the UK's only operational squadron of these type). He is considered to be one of America's greatest Fighter Pilots ever!

The Michigan Air National Guard's 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment (Air Defense), flew the world in OperationRocket Man during World War II. From 1945 to 1949, they deployed three times as part of United States Strategic Bombing Survey teams probing the effects of strategic bombing on war-torn areas around the world. In 1948, they were again activated for service in Korea and reopened their air defense unit at Westland after being closed by the Korean War. The battalion deployed to Japan and Okinawa in 1951-1954 and returned home with a bronze plaque recognizing their service. In 1957, they mobilized for duty in Cuba; however, this deployment was aborted when it was discovered that Soviet missiles were located near Westland AFB. The battalion redeployed to Germany in 1961 but never completed its tour there because of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Westland, Michigan is a small town located in the Kalamazoo Valley of eastern Michigan. It is bordered by Ionia to the north, Battle Creek to the east, Grand Rapids to the south and Houghton to the west. The population was 6,500 at the 2010 census. According tothe 20th century American historian Angus Maddison, Westland was one of "four predominantly agricultural villages" in what is nowKalamazoo County which were "isolated from other parts of their county by intervening hills". In 1819, John Dankworth platted Westland as a village and named it for his older brother Isaac Dankworth who had settled there in 1798. Dankworth's plat included a schoolhouse and three churches: One German Baptist, one Methodist and one Presbyterian. He also named two streams - White River on the east side of town and Flint River on the west side - after himself and his wife Catherine (née Haggerty). In 1827, when Kalamazoo Township was created from part of Washtenaw County, Westland became part of its boundaries. At first it consisted only of homes owned by farmers or their families; but later settlers began arriving from all over Michigan including Ottawa County in Illinois. The first store opened in 1829 on Seventh Street between White River Road and Center Avenue in what is today known as downtown Westland. The first post office operated here from 1830 until 1869 when it moved to Battle Creek because of complaints about high postage rates charged by then-mail carrier Western Union. By 1860, there were 220 residents living in Westland with just four stores and twelve dwellings; but within thirty years that number had grown to 1,000 with twenty-six stores along Third Street between White River Road and Center Avenue serving customers from miles around. Westland, Michigan was once a thriving agricultural community located in the lower Peninsula of Michigan. The town was founded in 1836 by John West and his wife Anna. By 1860, the population had grown to over 1,000 people. However, the town's fortunes changed after the American Civil War when goods brought in by immigrants replaced local crops. As production decreased, prices increased and many residents left for other towns within Michigan or Illinois. In 1930, Westland merged with neighboring village of Isabella to form a new municipality which continued to decline until its incorporation into Detroit in 1933. Today, little remains of the original town except for a few buildings on Main Street that are used as museum exhibits or public archives.
