Wayne is a small town in the upper peninsula of Michigan, located about 20 miles east of Detroit. The population was 5,099 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Clinton Township Micropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Grand Rapids–Mackinac City, Michigan micropolitan area. The first inhabitants of Wayne were Native American natives who lived there for many years before Europeans arrived in what is now Michigan. In 1795, French explorers discovered and named the region after General George Washington's home state of Virginia, which was then under British control. The name "Wayne" was selected because it sounded like a word used by Indians to describe a place where game could be found. In 1800, Wayne County was established as part of Huron County and became a separate political entity from that county when Huron merged with neighboring Macomb County to form what is now Michigan. The first courthouse in Wayne was built on Main Street in 1810. A post office called Wayne had been established at this location since 1809. In 1827, John Sibley became the first white settler in Wayne when he purchased land from the Kalkaska tribe near present-day Mackinac Island for $5 per acre (about $140 Today). Sibley built his cabin on his farm until 1840 when he moved upriver to what is now known as Sibleyville due to its proximity to his farmstead and trading post. In 1847, Josephine Stoffer married Jacob Stoffer, brother-in-law of Captain Augustus Haggerty who founded Cadillac on Mackinac Island near present day White Lake – today's Cadillac Township – and they moved into their own house there until 1850 when they bought land around present-day Dearborn Heights from David Cooks Sr.. There they raised chickens and began to plan their future; but soon learned that violence characterized life along Mackinac Island which made it difficult for them to achieve success in business ventures outside of agriculture (Cooks family still resides on Mackinac Island). When they returned to America after several years living abroad during the Mexican Revolution (1848), conditions had improved somewhat on Mackinac Island but not enough so that they were able to resume their previous successful activity as merchants/businessmen (Stoffer died suddenly while engaged in some legal action related thereto before returning home). After she recovered sufficiently from her injury resulting from an accident caused by Cooks’ son six weeks prior while playing with other children outdoors near her home at West Egg Harbor Township - one week after being released from Genesee Hospital - Stoffer again set off into public life service by becoming Supervisor of Dearborn Heights Schools District No 1 following James Fenton's resignation effective December 24th,... theirs remains one of only two female supervisors ever elected statewide in United States history... also noteworthy: she served out her entire term without seeking re-election; thereafter becoming Supervisor herself...
