Warren was founded in 1837 by Colonel George Warren and his brother-in-law, Judge John Sibley. The first post office in Warren opened in 1838. The town became a village in 1893 and a city in 1912. In 1979, the city merged with neighboring Lansing to form the current metropolitan area. The first settler in Warren was George Warren who came from Kensington, England in 1798. He built a cabin on what is now State Road 7 near present day Townsend Center. In 1837, Colonel George Warren purchased 6 acres of land east of State Road 7 from David Ladd for $50USD . In 1840, he donated another 4 acres to the government for use as an arsenal (the present site of the Lansing Armory). When Indian hostilities began around this time, Colonel GeorgeWarren decided to leave India for good and returned home to start a new life with his family. He arrived back at his cabin on state road 7 on October 12th 1840 where he found out that his wife Sarah had married Captain John Purdy while they were both still living at their old house on Little Canada Creek west ofState Road 3... They had two children: Anna Maria (1841) and George Washington (1843). On December 5th 1840 when word arrived that war was starting between Great Britain and France, Sarah abandoned her husband at his cabin along with their two young children; AnnaMaria &GeorgeWashington boarded an American ship called The Enterprise which sailed outbound from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard bound for Quebec City under captain David Dixon with all hands but three days prior to departure when news reached them that their father had died suddenly after drinking some whiskey which he claimed he got from traders working nearby; they never saw their father again or heard about him until after he died...
