According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,960 people residing in the town. Of this population, 1,583 were male and 1,461 were female; 1003 households were made up of individuals and 577 had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years; for every 100 females there were 98 males. There are no schools within Walker; students must travel to Battle Creek or other nearby communities for education purposes starting eighth grade onward

Walker was a small community in the lower Peninsula of Michigan when General George Washington and his army invaded the state in 1794. The town was founded by Nicholas Walker, a Revolutionary War veteran and part-owner of the nearby Wright County seat of Muskegon. After the war, Walker became an important post on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1812, he sold his land near present-day Lansing to John Lilliard, who built what is now Lansing State University there. In 1837, Walker's son Nicholas died intestate and left behind a large estate including much of what is now Walker Township and portions of Livingston and Oakland counties. The estate passed through several hands until it came into the ownership of James Fenton in 1906. In 1911, it was donated to the state by Fenton's widow as part of Michigan's HLWTP program for public education. The population ofWalker decreased from 350 in 1830 to just 10 in 1860 due to waves of migration from eastern Michigan to central Wisconsin during that time period. However, since then its population has slowly grown again as residents have migrated back into the township after difficulties with drugs or other businesses located there caused their departure or relocation elsewhere. Today, Walker remains a sleepy little town surrounded by rural farmland with only a few hundred inhabitants; however its history – both positive and negative – will always be remembered hereabouts
