Troy, Michigan is a town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,065 at the 2010 census. The community is part of the Lansing–East Lansing–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. Troy was founded in 1814 by Peter and David Hough as a small village on the banks of the Ottawa River. It became an incorporated town in 1903. The first settler in what is now Troy was David Hough, who came to the area from Kentucky in 1814. He built a cabin on a bluff above the river and named it Hough's Hole after himself and his father-in-law,Peter Hough Sr.. In 1821, David's son John Aiken moved to Troy from Wolverine County and started farming near present day Hastings Center. By 1830, there were nine families living in Troy; all but one of these were farmers or fisherman. In 1834, three brothers— John Davenport (Jr.), James Davenport (III), and Nicholas Davenport—founded what would become Detroit Savings Bank & Trust Company which still operates today as one of MI's largest financial institutions. They initialed savings bonds with local paper money before opening up their own bank building four years later on West Main Street just east of downtown Troy. This early bank operation became known as "The old Three Brothers" because that’s how long each brother held title to his share of voting rights for Town Councilmember until he sold his interest to his two younger brothers – James Davenport (Jr.) gubernatorial candidate 1908 and 1916; Nicholas Davenport senior Democratic National Committeeman 1924-1925; John Aiken Republican National Committeeman 1928-1932). In 1835, four more settlers arrived: Moses Clemens (1824-1885), George Wirthlin (1827-1893), Patrick McNamara (1829-1900) & Daniel Shields (1831-1906). All five had come by boat downriver from Saginaw Bay via Huron Pass into Upper Peninsula territory then eastward along Big Rapids Creek all the way to Shiawassee Lake where they prospected for silver ore before settling hereabouts about 1840. After several failed attempts at finding silver over many months only some fifty pounds worth was ever found but this led to great wealth for these men since it opened up new opportunities for business ventures including lumber shipments back upstream as well as providing much needed employment during times of economic recession when resources were hard to find outside of Detroit proper! The first post office opened in 1865 although mail delivery did not start until 1870 due primarily to lack of horses available for transportation across country at that time! In 1865/66 General Hugh Thornton established military garrison duty at abandoned Fort Dearborn just north side Blacksmith Shop Road west of modern day Griggs Road while also building an arsenal nearby making him one of America’s earliest landowning military officers! In 1886/87 MajorJohn Fenton took command occupancy duties at newly built Fort Dearborn following its conversion into a national guard post during Reconstruction responsible for law enforcement within Washtenaw County!. Dorothy Ewing Fenton born October 21st 1912 married Kenneth Duncan Maynard on October 15th 1937 located near Cottage Grove Township northeast corner Of White Water Rd And Maple Leaf Dr just off highway 471 southeast corner OfGriggs Rd opposite cottage grove school .
