Troy is a small city in the Grand Valley of Michigan, located about 25 miles northwest of Detroit. The population was 14,826 at the 2000 census. Troy is a city in the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek area of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Battle Creek County and has a population of 61,711 as of 2010. The name "Troy" was derived from Onondaga Indian word "truhsa," meaning "settlement." The first white settlement in what is now Troy was by William Fenton in 1795, and he named it after his home town in England, Truro. The city was platted in 1837, and became an incorporated municipality on July 1, 1847. In the late 19th century, Troy played a significant role as a center for music and theater production because it had access to several theaters along with some large music halls including the Grand Opera House and the Detroit Palace Theatre. The downtown area also saw development into residential neighborhoods such as Forest Hills and Wintershall during this time period. In 1914, Mayor Harry Sussman proclaimed that "Troy has become one of America's most picturesque cities". During World War II, Troy served as a major supply depot for Army troops fighting in Europe. After the war ended, many businesses were lost due to economic recession but Boulevard Theatre reopened in 1948 with new management which kept it operational until 1978 when it closed again due to fire damage caused by arsonists. Some notable buildings that were destroyed or damaged during these years include: First National Bank (1948), Mr Tompkins Hardware (1949), Belle Tire Center (1953), American Legion Hall (1957), Old Main rededication (1965) and St Louis Park Baptist Church dedication (1966). In 1980, battle creek college opened its doors with new facilities located at 216 W Main Street which included an art museum called 'The Forge', dormitories for students[1], library wing[2], gymnasium[3]and professional sports venue known as The Pavilion which hosted both men's collegiate basketball games played through 1988[4] as well as women's NCAA Division I womens volleyball matches from 1973 to 1984,[5][6] before being replaced by current Trojan Athletics Complex which includes all athletics fields indoor/outdoor throughout building occupants can enjoy without having to leave their residences The city’s economy continued to be revitalized with heavy investment following school unification across all four public schools system via Plainfield Charter School District; starting construction on what would become “the most advanced education district east of Chicago”; forming partnershipships with other districts leading up to operations including Kalkaska-Lapeer Community District; culminated into full operation on September 1st 2009 when Battle Creek Township merged into Troy.[7][8]
