Troy, Michigan is a small city located in the northwest corner of Oakland County, Michigan. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. Troy is the only city in the county and it is part of Metro Detroit. The area that now makes up Troy was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1824, when Territorial Governor John Mifflin designated what is now Troy as a district for development near Dearborn Heights, General James K. Polk assigned it to Woodward Avenue Township in Macomb County. For many years, Troy was an important commercial center on Detroit's west side. It became known for its leather industry and other products until World War II when aircraft production took over and Wacoal moved to nearby Lansing. After World War II, Chevrolet built a plant there from 1951 to 1957; this helped make Troy one of GM's key manufacturing towns during their golden age of vehicle production. In recent years, many businesses have left town or been forced out by competition from larger cities such as Detroit or Lansing-and withstood the economic downturns better than some others which lost much business during those times of recession and austerity measures throughout Michigan government across sectors (euphemistically called "the Great Recession").
