The Coast Guard has been providing service to the community in Troy, Michigan since 1915. The first Coast Guard station in the municipality was built on the current site of Harborview Hospital in 1922. Today, there are five Coast Guard stations located in Troy: one at Harborview Hospital, two at Veterans Affairs Medical Center, one on Saginaw Street east of downtown, and one on the west side of the river near State Street. The Coast Guard also operates a small boat dock and provides water rescue services. In addition to their regular duties as police officers and firefighters, the Coast Guardsmen provide safety for citizens during events such as large festivals or other major events. In 2006, they participated in Operation Neptune’s Spear which provided security for President George W. Bush during his visit to Michigan. In 2017, they responded to Hurricane Irma with help from local law enforcement and private citizens.

Troy, Michigan is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 25,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit-to-Windsor Metropolitan Statistical Area. Troy was founded in 1836 by Captain John Champion and his wife Eleanor Champion as a post office on the east side of what is now Troy State Hospital lot. The original town site lay within present day Troy Township but it was first settled by farmers on the west side of what is now Woodward Avenue between 1837 and 1840. In 1849, a new town site was platted on the east side of what is now River Road between Fort Gratiot to its north and Yale University to its south. It became known as "Troy" after General David Hunter's forces destroyed Fort Dearborn in 1812 while invading Canada. The city limits were established in 1896 when it merged with neighboring villages of Holland Township (now Warren) to form one large city. In 1913, an act of Congress directed that all mail be delivered through Detroit instead of via Buffalo because that city had been largely destroyed during World War I. This caused great traffic congestion around Troy due to numerous deliveries from different parts of the country across Lake Erie and downriver into downtown Detroit; however, no major fire or other calamity occurred until 1927 when an ice storm destroyed many homes in downtown Troy near Huron Street just before Christmas Eve

Troy was founded in 1801 by Nicholas Troy, a fur trader. The town was named after the Roman god of war, Titus. The first school in Troy was built in 1802. In 1807, the Michigan Territory was organized and Troy became its capital. In 1861, the United States acquiredMichigan and renamed it the United States of America. Troy became part of Detroit County and served as its county seat from 1861 to 1967.
