After Peet's Sons Holdings Corporation sold the business to Kraft Foods Inc., it closed down in 1992. Many local businesses were turned into military bases such as Ford Motor Company’s Dearborn Plant which produced vehicles for the Allies; United Aircraft Corporation’s Rouge plant which manufactured planes for reconnaissance operations; Chrysler Corporation’s Royal Oak plant producing Jeep models;and Armstrong Whitworth Company’s Toledo plants manufacturing guns and other weapons.

The city's first mayor was Daniel Webster, and its first law enforcement officer was Captain John S. Hezekiah. In 1851, it became a village and in 1873, a city. Troy's population increased from 2,500 to over 30,000 by 1900. It experienced significant growth during World War II with the addition of new factories and housing developments; however, after the war the population declined again until reaching its low point in the 1960s. However, since then there have been steady increases in both population and job opportunities as Troy becomes an increasingly sought-after community due to its location within easy commuting distance of major metropolitan areas such as Detroit and Cleveland.
