This led to increased violence in the city and it was decided that handguns should no longer be possessed without a license from the police department. During World War II, many citizens turned to firearms for protection because they could not obtain weapons through normal channels due to rationing or other restrictions placed on civilian firearm possession during wartime. This led to an increase in gun sales once again after prohibition ended. As more people moved into town they began purchasing property along Saginaw River which led to development near present day Midtown Drive between Third Street eastward from downtown . In 1837, John Sollie built a sawmill on what would become known as Sollie Point (now part of downtown Traverse City). By 1865, there were five mills in town – three for cotton Textiles Company president Augustus Kelley and his brother-in-law James Fenton; one for Wm Purdy; one for A J Goodrich & Sons Brewery; and one for C G Watts & Son Lumber Merchants Association store). In 1868, lumber magnate Solomon Grundy opened his first store in downtown Traverse City - Grundy's department store remains open today as an anchor retailer among other stores inside Mackinac Island Mall (the second largest shopping mall in North America) - followed by another major retail development when wagons carrying goods to DeWitt Clinton Glass Works arrived at Sollie Point from Buffalo on July 6th 1870 bringing over 1 million pounds (454 metric tons) worth of glass products direct from Buffalo to Traverse City! This event forever changed downtown Traverse City's skyline with its magnificent white La Salle Tower dominating view across much of the Lansing River valley below! During World War II when Detroit was bombed extensively damage occurred throughout southern Ontario including much destruction to downtowns such as that done to Toronto’s Queen Street which led General Motors plant manager George Daley remarking “What kind of God prize does Detroit win?” To reflect this patriotic sentiment GM constructed a large new plant adjacent to their old flour mill site just north east along Woodward Avenue between Cass Corridor Road and Main Street during 1943-1944 just before war production shifted from Flint Assembly Plant back east into Livonia where employment increased 5 fold!! With wartime production shifting back towards prewar levels corporate morale soared resulting GM moving all operations staff back into Detroit effective January 9th 1945!!! One can only imagine how things would have been different if Paul Revere had not shown up at Dunkirk Harbor prior to battle ending!! Development continued apace after armistice with numerous businesses opening up including six banks during 1945-1946 alone with more than 50 newly formed companies activated dirigible taxi service becoming available ca 1947! Some contributing factors include increased demand due German rearmament which caused fuel prices skyrocketing; shortages resultant from American involvement in World War II resulting in unprecedented federal largesse given out monthly via check casks!!! This generosity helped spur economic growth while creating thousands jobs !! Aftermath: Many abandoned storefronts replaced with modern office buildings while many others converted into residences following war termination The post-war years brought various changes but ultimately Nozick Detention Center resulted whichGM demolished without warning or explanation leaving behind a vacant lot now used by local artists as an exhibition space
The city of Traverse City was founded in 1855 by the brothers George and Nicholas Lansing. The city's first settlers were farmers who arrived from New England. In 1860, Traverse City became the capital of Michigan Territory. In 1868, it was renamed Lansing after General James K. Polk as part of a statewide name change. The city experienced growth during the 1870s whenbrooklyn-based Northern Pacific Railroad built a line through the area and established factories in downtown. The Panic of 1893 caused economic decline for the city but it regained its status as an industrial center during the late 19th century with development of heavy industries like shipbuilding and aluminum production. Growth stopped during World War I but resumed following World War II with increased demand for steel products from military vehicles and aircraft manufacturers. During the 1960s, Traverse City experienced a rapid increase in population due to oil exploration activity in nearby states such as Michigan and Canada which led to new industry development including software companies, entertainment complexes, and medical institutions.traversecitymichigan
