The Traverse City area is home to several coffee shops and cafes that have been in operation for centuries. Some of the earliest coffeehouses in the area were The Gilded Cage and The Coffee House at 9th and Michigan, which opened in 1827. In 1881, The Gilded Cage moved to its current location on State Street and continued serving coffee until 1971. A few years later, The Coffee House closed down after a fire destroyed most of the building. In 1907, The Dutch Bros. Coffee Shop opened on Superior Avenue in the heart of downtown Traverse City. This shop was one of the first places customers could buy coffee from local roasters. It operated until 1951. In 1916, Mr.'s Place opened on Main Street near where it remains today as an artsy cafe with a variety of drinks and snacks. This store served up bagels, croissants, donuts, pastries and more until it went out of business in 1984. In 1925, Donahue’s Cafeteria opened on Asbury Avenue adjacent to Woodward Park in downtown Traverse City with 12 food items including sandwiches (6 different types), pizzas (3 different types), hot dogs (2 different types) and more than 20 desserts including pies (5 different types), pastries (8 different kinds), cakes (4 different kinds) and cookies (12 kinds). It operated until 1978 when it burned down due to an electrical failure. Traverse City, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Traverse City County. The population was 26,589 at the 2010 census and is expected to grow to 31,812 by 2021. The city is home to the University of Michigan–Dearborn and various businesses such as Ford Motor Co., Alcoa, General Motors Co., Chrysler Group LLC, Kellogg Company, WOW! World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. The name "Traverse City" originated from two French words meaning travel and crossing over or between. This was given to the town because it sat on the banks of the straits from which many traders crossed into Canada during the 1800s. The first residents of what would become Traverse City were fur traders who came along with John Jacob Astor in 1806. They established a trading post on Grand River near where today's Eastern Market stands today. Afterward, other entrepreneurs set up businesses in what is now downtown Traverse City- including one run by Julius Erving called Empire Furniture Mart which opened in 1907 on Third Street near present day First Avenue North. In 1916, there was a fire that destroyed most of downtown but also left much of infrastructure intact such as an aqueduct that still delivers water to eastern neighborhoods today (itself being rebuilt following another fire). During World War II, Detroit's Arsenal Seaway created a need for workers so trawlers went out looking for them throughout Lake Superior instead of coming ashore through Detroit due to wartime restrictions on entering America via Great Lakes ports like Detroit- so Traverse City became known as "the Landing Place". As a result of this fame and notoriety Japanese nationals living in Flint decided they wanted their own version of life here too so they brought over some Japanese people while construction continued on Watertower Place across Second Avenue from present day Joe Louis Arena (now State Theatre) back then called "Walking Street". Traverse City is a town in Huron County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing–Farmington Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Traverse City was originally called by Indian nations the Muskegon District and by white settlers Eastpointe Township. The first post office was established in 1837 in Eastpointe Township. In 1851, the township was divided into two townships: Muskegon Heights and Muskegon River Township. In 1867, Muskegon Heights became Traverse City and River Township became Clinton Township. In 1898, Clinton Township merged with neighboring Auburn to form Mackinac Island Borough which remained an independent municipality until it merged into Detroit on April 1, 2006. On July 1, 2010, Mackinac Island Borough dissolved and its residents were annexed into Detroit as part of that city's administrative changes following the 2012 US Census which counted 7,827 people living in 572 municipalities within Michigan.[1] According to the United States Census Bureau, Traverse City has a total area of , all land. The only stream running through it is the Muskegon River which forms its southern border along State Road 41W (Mackinac Boulevard). The climate in this area is characterized by hotsummer and cool winters; however., summers can be extremely hot or very cold depending on location().
