The United States Air Force is a vital part of our country's defense. The USAF provides airpower for the US homeland, overseas, and in contingencies such as Operation Neptune's Spear. In the early 1900s, the United States military had a small gift history in Traverse City. The first gifts were given during World War I by General John J. Pershing to the soldiers of Michigan. In 1922, General Thomas E. Marshall gave a set of five medals and three swords to the city's mayor for its bravery during the American Revolution. In 1941, Rear Admiral Chester W. Nimitz presented beautiful Tiffany-designed Collectors’ Boxes filled with items from America's naval forces to members of the city government.
Traverse City, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan that is located on the Traverse River. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Traverse City were French traders and fur-traders who arrived during the 16th century. The area was first known as Point de la Croix (or "Crooked Point"), because of its location at an angle near where the Traverse River flows out into Lake Huron. In 1795, General James Kieft founded what became Kieft's Fort on land he had purchased from a Native American chief named Washakie. In 1837, Traverse City was incorporated as a village under the name of Mackinac Island when it was added to Michigan Territory by Governor Lucius Nott as part of his Indian Removal Act efforts to remove all Native Americans from what are now southern Ontario and Northwestern Michigan. Most of present-day Traverse City developed in this time period; most commercial activity took place along Orion Street which ran through downtown until well into the 20th century. Since 1975, much development has taken place around Orion Boulevard and State Street which run parallel to each other south of downtown; these streets have been called "the Promenade" due to their close proximity to many notable businesses and residential neighborhoods including Park Place and Midtown Center developments nearby on State Street South between Orion Boulevard and Woodward Ave., while still remaining within city limits

Traverse City, Michigan is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2010 census, its population was 64,521. The area now called Traverse City was first settled by Paleo-Indians in the late 5th century AD and was known as Thiawatha or The Village. The first European to visit the area was French trader Nicholas-Jacques de L'Isle on his expedition in 1696, who named it for John George Washington. In 1824, James Kite purchased land at what is now Battle Creek and developed it into a town named after him. In 1827, he opened the Battle Creek Canal which connected the Great Lakes with Lake Superior through Traverse City. It became an important transportation artery during the 19th century because of its location between Northwestern Ontario and Northwestern Michigan Territory. The canal system served as a model for later water systems all over America and Europe. In 1835, Detroit was founded as aTownship on Buel Fund land south of Battle Creek along current US-01/2 east of I-94 (the precursor to I-94). Detroit quickly became an important center for commerce and industry due to its location on two main shipping routes: one northward via the Huron River and one southward via Lake Erie and Lake Huron
The city of Traverse City was founded in 1834, by George and Anna Thomson. The town had a population of only 100 people when it was founded, but it soon grew to become one of the largest towns in Michigan. The Thomson family played an important role in the development of Traverse City, and their descendants continue to play a significant role in its history. The Thomson family also donated land for the construction of the first roundabout in Traverse City, which is still in use today. In 1938, Traverse City became the capital of Michigan.
