Taylor is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the Grand River. The population was 7,033 at the 2010 census. It is located in the Kalamazoo-Port Huron metropolitan area and is one of two cities in Washtenaw County with a population over 10,000 residents. The city began as a small settlement known as "Moses" on Black Lake east of what is now Taylor. On July 4, 1837, by order of Territorial Governor Cassius Mott, Moses was renamed "Taylor" after Zachary Taylor—the then-presidential candidate of the United States who had served as governor of Missouri previous year—in honor of General John Custer's victory at Battle Haysville that same day.
