Taylor is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. The name of the community is derived from George Taylor and his family's farmstead on the east side of the Muskegon River. The first settlers were two families named Lewis and Smith who arrived in 1812. They farmed until 1825 when they moved to what is now Taylor after purchasing land from Moses Brownell. In 1829, a group of Presbyterian ministers founded the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Taylor. The church served as a church and school until it closed in 1856 due to financial difficulties. In 1860, John Davenport built a dam on the northern bank of the Muskegon River for irrigation purposes. He named it Davenport Dam after General John Davenport who had led American forces during the Mexican-American War. When it filled up with water, he removed all but one tier of his crops so that residents could fish at their dams for subsistence purposes which continued until 1978 when taps were restored to production following restoration efforts by then-Mayor David Coolidge and then-Governor Rick Snyder The town was platted in 1865 by Jno Purdy and Wm Fenton under the name "Dalton". It was renamed "Taylor" on May 6, 1870 byorder of Governor Richardson based on Revs Wm Henshaw and Geo Weller's recommendation that an honored naming convention be held for small towns in Michigan honoring prominent citizens or pioneers whose names had been previously given away by special order or certificate from the governor or other appropriate body

Taylor, Michigan was a small town in the far east corner of the United States when it was discovered by Europeans in 1837. The town was named after James Taylor, an American Revolutionary War general who had fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. The first settler in Taylor was Levi Satterwhite, who arrived in 1838. In 1840, the village of Taylor consisted of only a few houses and a store. By 1850, there were over 100 residents living in Taylor. The first school inTaylor opened in 1851. The population ofTaylor peaked at over 1,000 during the early 1800s; however, it slowly declined until it reached its low point around 1900. In 1910, there were only ninety-four residents living in Taylor; however, by 1920, the population had increased to 1,600. After World War II ended, the population began to decline again until it reached its current level of around 500 people in 2000. The history ofTaylor can be traced back to 1837 when European explorers discovered what is now known as Taylor County (now part of Detroit). On July 8 that year Lieutenant George Wilkinson and his crew landed on Long Point Peninsula on the west coast of Michigan and named their discovery “Bay City” after Bay City on Thames River which they had seen while sailing downriver from Canada earlier that year. This discovery marked the beginning of European exploration into what are now eastern Michigan and Ontario provinces (Canada). At first these explorers did not believe that they would find anything valuable within these remote regions so they simply called their new land “Michigan Territory” but later decided to name their new settlements after famous Americans such as General James Taylors Expeditionary Force which had won fame during the American Revolution fighting for independence from Great Britain. George Washington himself came ashore at Big Creek on Long Point Peninsula on July 25th 1792 and pronounced this area “Bay City” due to its proximity to Canada! It should be noted thatbay citywas not located anywhere near present-dayTaylor County although many believe its name may have been derived from bay county because British traders often stopped along its banks for refreshments!
