Taylor, Michigan was a town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States when it was incorporated as a village in 1834. It is now part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Taylor at the 2010 census was 9,442. The first settler in what is now Taylor was James Kapp, who arrived on July 8, 1824 from New York City. He and his wife Anna were the first white people to live in what is now Taylor. In 1835 James Kapp's brother-in-law John Forbes founded an agricultural settlement called Rangely on the east bank of the Mackinac River west of present day Taylor. rangely grew into a small community that included about seventy residents by 1840. The name Rangely may be derived from "range" (a type of corn) and "lay" (to set). In 1842 George Stephenson built and operated the first steamboat on the Mackinac River between Old Portage and Whitefish Bayou. The boat carried passengers and goods upriver to Muskegon Heights for sale before returning downriver to Whitefish Bayou on Sundays during summertime when there wasn't enough traffic to warrant traveling by boat all week long. This popular transportation service continued until 1850 when Stephenson built his own steamboat company across the river at Sault Ste Marie which achieved greater success than his predecessor because he could offer passenger fares as well as freight rates that undercut those offered by his predecessors. Salesman Thomas Matson established what became known as Matson's Landing near present day Taylor in 1849 after purchase of an island opposite Green Island near Wabash Rapids where he erected a landing stage with wharf facilities and storage for cargo along with a millstream running parallel to both shores which could extract water for irrigation purposes from adjacent woods bordering the riverbanks. The site became known thereafter as Matson's Landing Park due to its proximity to downtown Lansing and its associated attractions such as Pee Dee Lake Park which opened in 1893 adjacent to today's State Fairgrounds across from Eastern Market Square
Taylor was first settled in 1814 by the Washburn family. The first settler, John Washburn, built a log cabin on the current site of Taylor in 1818. In 1830, Josephine Washburn married Lewis Cass and their son, Lewis Cass Jr., founded the small town of Dearborn. By 1840, Dearborn had become an important center for trade and commerce in Michigan. After the Civil War, Taylor grew rapidly as a result of its strategic location at the intersection of two major railroads. In 1865, it became part of Grand Rapids County and later that year became a city. In 1903, Taylor was renamed after Dr. John C. Taylor who had been instrumental in developing modern medical care in Michigan.
