The town has been around since 1871 when a man named William Brough erected a log cabin on what is now Hospitality Lane. It grew slowly until 1907 when it accepted an offer from George Stephenson to become his new town site. At first, development was slow because there were only a few homes and businesses in town. However, with logging being stopped and people moving into town, business began to grow rapidly and by 1912 Sturgis had over 100 businesses. Today, Sturgis remains an important economic center for its surrounding area with many companies based in the downtown area including United Steelworkers Local #426 (UAW), Steak n Shake (SUY), Michaels Stores Inc., JCPenney & Co., Denny's Restaurants & Brewpubs Inc., Stateline Casino Resort and more. The downtown area also houses several bars and restaurants that serve up great food options such as Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery which offers tours for visitors during summertime; Old National Bank which has been open since 1902; and Hardee's restaurant which opened its doors in 1984. In addition to its economic importance, Sturgis also enjoys a rich history that can be traced back to 1871 when William Brough erected his log cabin on Hospitality Lane. Today, there are several buildings from that era still standing in town including Brough’s Cabin which is currently used as office space by nearby businesses; Hotel de Ville which was built in 1908 adjacent to Brough’s Cabin; Post Office Building which served as both courthouse and post office until 1925; Masonic Temple which was completed in 1915 next door to Masonic Temple Building; Gist Millinery store founded ca 1904 that closed down in 2000 but reopened under new ownership late last year - this building now houses several local shops along side various restaurants/cafes/bars within walking distance of Gist Millinery store inside another old mill property across from it- all these properties are open for visitation during summertime! Three other mills have also been documented within minutes driving time of downtown: Anson Mills (opened 1886), White Clay Lumbermill (opened 1902) and Chatfield Mill(opened 1914). All three mills remain active today providing jobs for locals while producing unique products made right here at home such as flourishes such as chatfield cheese or flourishes like whiteclay lumber!
