Sturgis is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the seat of Sturgis County. The population was 9,632 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Sturgis were French fur traders in 1784. In 1846, Sturgis became an elected township under the Michigan Constitution and voted to become a city on December 1, 1853. On July 16, 1907, as part of an agreement between Canada and the United States to resolve boundary issues arising from America's admission into Confederation, the original townships of Ottawa and Macomb were merged into Sturgis Township while Stillwater Township was added to form a new city with its own government. The economy of Sturgis has been based largely on agriculture since its founding, although some Manufacturing has also taken place over time including: watercraft manufacturing (1910-1970), paper products (1930s-1980s), Chevrolet parts (1970s-present), telecommunications (1985-Present) and other services such as health care/fairs/festivals (1960s-2010).
The first permanent settlers in Sturgis, Michigan were James and Martha Kapp. The town was founded on the banks of the Potawatomi River in 1826 by James and Martha Kapp. The name “Sturgis” was derived from an Indian word meaning “watery place.” In 1837, John Snyder organized a mill at the mouth of the White River to produce flour for the market in Chicago. This led to development of mills and businesses throughout the village. In 1848, Sturgis became a county seat after it was moved from Battle Creek to its present location. A courthouse and jail were built in 1851 and1852, respectively. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses located in downtown Sturgis with a population of over 1,500 people.
