Coffee has been a part of the Sturgis community for over 200 years. In 1865, John Atwater founded Atwater's Coffee in downtown Sturgis. The first coffee shop in town was opened in 1875 by Capt. George Prentice and his father, Capt. Jabez Prentice. In 1907, J.B. Baird & Sons purchased Atwater's Coffee and turned it into one of the largest grocery stores in the area with over 100 employees. The store continued to operate until 1972 when it closed its doors for good after many years of success. In 1971, Starbucks announced that they were opening their first store in Sturgis- making coffee the third most popular drink at their business after tea and water (following soft drinks). Starbucks quickly became an establishment within the community with numerous locations throughout Michigan and Wisconsin including Grand Rapids, Lansing, Detroit, Milwaukee and more! Today Starbucks operates 6 stores across North America with plans to open additional locations throughout 2018! Today coffee continues to play an important role within the Sturgis community as a symbol of friendship and commerce - both old-school and modern!
