Sterling Heights, Michigan is a city in the Grand Rapids metropolitan area, located on the east side of the St. Joseph River. The population was 497 at the 2000 census and 524 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek-Harrisonville micropolitan statistical area. Sterling Heights was founded in 1837 by James Fenton as a means of transporting goods to and from Battle Creek, then an agricultural center on the opposite bank of the river. The town became a industrial center after oil production began nearby in 1901. Manufacturers included Belle Tire, Goodyear, JBL Corporation (now Beats Electronics), Chrysler Corporation (now Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), GMC trucks and vans, Ford Motor Company (now Ford Motor Co.), and many others. The city's first school was built in 1839; it became Sterling Heights High School in 1907 when Battle Creek Elementary School moved to its present location across First Avenue from what is now downtown Sterling Heights. In 1945, during World War II, Sterling Heights became home to General Motors' wartime assembly plants for military vehicles such as tanks and planes; this ended within two years due to plant closings nationwide. After World War II ended, many heavy manufacturing jobs left Sterling Heights but heavy industry still remains today with production of cars such as Buick LaCrosse and Cadillac CTS sedans as well as other auto products including engine parts and bodywork for new car models. In 1917, Sterling Heights became one of only two communities in Michigan that participated in Project 66, which aimed to improve transportation links between Lake Huron and downtown Detroit. In 1957, Sterling Heights partnered with nearby Warren Park in what would become known as "the Valley North." This project saw the construction of several large industrial plants including Alcoa's Campanile plant (now part of Arcelle Homes) and Ford's Dearborn Plant No. 5 (now part of Bloomfield Township). These plants produced jobs for residents throughout Dearborn County until they closed down in the early 1970s during Rust Belt recession. Today, Sterling Heights remains an important center for cultural life within MetroDetroit; it has been home to several major theaters such as Regal Cinemas Southtowne Plaza and Highland Village Mall since 1978, when AMC built its first movie theater outside of Philadelphia/Middletown PA., adjacent to Gratiot Avenue Financial Center on Washtenaw Boulevard across from Gratiot Elementary School.
